Overview Field Tech III

– Responsible for maintaining and cleaning water and wastewater systems; identifying water meter equipment problems; and performing water meter and system maintenance activities.

Work Location and Schedule Travel between service areas near McHenry, IL. Monday through Friday with possible after‑hour and weekend on‑call support. Must be available for on‑call rotation and emergency response.

What You’ll Do

Perform manual labor installing, repairing, and maintaining water/sewer lines and force mains.

Maintain and test water meters; perform new meter installations.

Conduct tasks related to water and sewer infrastructure maintenance and rehabilitation.

Install, repair, and replace underground water and wastewater mains and service laterals using basic plumbing tools, tapping machines, pipe cutters, reamers, wrenches, and pneumatic/hydraulic tools.

Inspect for cross‑connection violations and other unsafe conditions.

Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records in CC&B.

Document customer interaction and field activities.

Act as liaison between customers and customer service personnel to resolve problems or complaints.

Respond to customer inquiries regarding meter reading schedules, billing, and meter operation.

Provide on‑site customer communication.

Assist with mechanical, electrical, and piping system maintenance at water/wastewater facilities, collections, and distribution systems.

Travel daily between worksites on company time.

Work on‑call rotation, responding to emergencies as required.

Additional Responsibilities

May assist AM with daily tasks for other field technicians.

May repair water/wastewater treatment plant equipment.

May walk 5–10 miles per day, reading 200–1,200 meters per day and recording volume usage.

Determine consistency of meter readings and report unusual cases to supervisor.

Inspect meters and connections for defects, damage, and unauthorized connections; indicate irregularities on appropriate forms.

Turn off service for nonpayment or new occupants as needed.

Assist with ordering parts and job costing.

Prepare operational reports related to water meter reading activities and distribution systems.

Assist with installation and disconnection of water meters and sewer services.

Perform routine tasks related to treatment facility operation while learning processes and plant equipment.

Assist in maintaining plant compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

What You Bring - Experience

Requires at least 2 years of mechanical work experience.

Education and Certification

High school diploma or GED.

Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

Nice to Have

Water meter reading experience preferred.

Distribution and/or collections certification required by state law, or ability to attain certification within 12 months of hire.

Experience obtaining dual certifications or first‑level operating license.

CDL license preferred.

Physical and Technical Skills

Ability to frequently perform moderate to heavy physical demands: lifting up to 75 lbs., walking 10+ miles daily, climbing, and mechanical repair.

Ability to read meters, charts, and gauges and maintain accurate records.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize, and analyze data.

Mathematical proficiency for determining chemical doses and flow rates.

Professional relationships with public, coworkers, and regulatory agencies.

Computer skills: MS Word, Excel, tablet, mobile device; ability to learn internal software.

Operates equipment, machinery, tools, and materials essential to duties.

Work Environment

After‑hour and weekend on‑call support may be required.

Some travel within service area.

Shift work and weekend scheduling may be required.

Moderate to heavy physical demands: lifting up to 75 lbs., walking 10+ miles daily, climbing, mechanical repair.
