Information Professional Officer – Navy
The U.S. Navy’s Information Professional (IP) performs essential cyber operations to support intelligence, communication, and command and control across global maritime assets. IPs plan, acquire, secure, operate, and maintain the Naval network and its supporting systems.
Responsibilities
Lead Naval network warfare missions by developing tactics and procedures to achieve tactical, strategic, and business advantages afloat and ashore.
Drive interoperability with joint, allied, and coalition partners.
Build professional excellence through education, training, certification, and milestone qualifications.
Optimize organizational effectiveness using cutting‑edge technologies, knowledge management techniques, and a culture of innovation.
Oversee Information Systems Technicians – Enlisted Sailors, who serve as IT specialists.
Work Environment
Serve on Battle Group staffs aboard ships at sea.
Work in C4I/Space/Surveillance on shore tours.
Serve on major Navy and joint staffs.
Command key communication and surveillance facilities worldwide.
Training & Advancement IP candidates attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, R.I., followed by a five‑week IP Basic Course in Pensacola, Fla. Candidates must complete specific qualifications during Fleet tours and pursue advanced education opportunities. Promotions are based on performance and availability.
Education Opportunities
Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) or Navy War College (NWC).
Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) at service colleges.
Graduate certificates, DoD certifications, executive fellowships, and information assurance scholarships.
Qualifications & Requirements
A four‑year degree from a regionally accredited institution in a technical field (Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Operations, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or General Engineering).
U.S. citizenship; willingness to serve worldwide; eligibility for a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) security clearance; qualified for sea duty.
For officer positions, a bachelor’s degree is required.
