Job Description GIS Technicians are expected to have basic level knowledge of GIS programs, spatial and cartographic understanding, and GIS software skills. This is an entry‑level technical support position that works closely with Designers, Engineers, GIS Management, and other support staff. The incumbent will perform cartographic displays using the ESRI Suite, Autodesk, and other software programs to support engineering and construction detailed drawings of electrical assets within a production‑level team environment. Additionally, the incumbent will assist in tracking project status by using web‑based mapping tools such as ESRI ArcGIS Online. The position requires job dedication, teamwork, and individual interactions with driven processes, including QA/QC, and distinct deadlines in order to provide quality to client‑requested products and services.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Prepare drawings using ESRI’s ArcMap/ArcGIS, AutoCAD, Microstation, or other integrated electronic drawing packages as required.

Assist in creating web‑based mapping tools (ESRI ArcGIS Online) webapps, webmaps, and dashboards for client and internal use.

Fully proficient with the placement and maintenance of graphical features in client GIS systems such as ArcFM, Intergraph FRAMME, Small World, or G‑Tech.

Develop a working knowledge of client construction standards and utility information systems.

Develop and maintain drawing standards (fonts, line weights, border sheets, naming conventions, etc.) for company‑produced drawings.

Prepare documentation and reports using MS Word, MS Excel, Microsoft Access Database, Fulcrum, Nitro Pro, and Adobe Acrobat.

Assist with implementing and managing field data collection tools and tasks, including GPS devices and post‑processing.

Support the maintenance and operation of client GIS applications by maintaining, reporting, and posting work or by gathering data to be inputted by others.

Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

High school degree or GED required; Associate’s degree preferred; Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geospatial Science, Geography, Environmental Science, Computer Science, or GIS certification preferred.

0–2 years of GIS and/or CAD experience working in the GIS utility industry.

Proficient with GIS programs (ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Online) and CAD software (AutoCAD, MicroStation).

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to read and interpret procedural documents, write simple correspondence, and present information in one‑on‑one and small‑group settings.

Basic mathematical and reasoning abilities with strong attention to detail.

Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, capable of working independently, team‑oriented, and customer‑oriented.

Physical Demands & Work Environment Physical demands: Stand 1/3–2/3 of the time, walk 1/3–2/3, sit 2/3+, use hands 2/3+, lift up to 25 lb, vision requirements: close vision, distance vision, depth perception. Work environment: occasional wet, humid conditions; no moving mechanical parts; occasional outdoor weather; moderate noise.
