Overview Of The Company
Fox TV Stations owns and operates 29 full‑power broadcast television stations in the U.S. These include stations located in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas (DMAs), duopolies in 11 DMAs, and the three largest DMAs (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). 18 of the stations are affiliated with the FOX Network. The stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news each week and distribute sports, entertainment and syndicated content.
Job Description To direct news and studio production staff during live broadcasts of news, sports and local programming; to direct news production sessions; and to advise News Managers on all matters relating to production techniques and standards.
Duties
Direct live broadcasts (80%). Work closely with producers and newsroom staff on rundown preparation, on‑air production requirements and new concept implementation. Provide editorial input on spelling errors of chyrons, graphics, etc. Establish quality control and a consistent look across technical operational positions.
Direct non‑live PSA’s, programs, commercial production sessions and other pre‑taped elements (10%).
Conduct pre‑ or post‑newscast technical meetings to troubleshoot recurring problems (5%).
Notify management or appropriate departments of any issues that need to be addressed; follow up on problems that can be remedied by the director.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant News Director or News Director (5%).
Equipment Operated Various broadcast production equipment including intercom systems, newsroom computer system, Sony ELC software coding system, etc.
Working Conditions Primary work environment is the newsroom and control rooms. Requires minimal physical activity (approximately 2 hours of typing over an 8 ½‑hour day). In‑house settings include studio/control room temperatures ranging from 55°F to 80°F and humidity levels from 10% to 70+%. Directors may be called to out‑of‑house shoots, directing events from inside a production truck control room.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills Proven ability to exercise control over production/technical staff during live programming; knowledge of the broadcast industry and local news production; ability to contribute ideas for on‑air appearance; understanding of technical terminology used in control rooms; adaptability to fast‑paced, changing technical environments; clear and concise leadership; and ability to maintain harmonious relationships with peers and superiors.
Minimum Qualifications, Education and Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field required.
Experience: Minimum of three to five years as a broadcast director, preferably in news. Must have a director reel of show production. Ancillary training/experience with Sony ELC preferred.
