Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)
We are a fast-paced, growing construction company that delivers safety, quality, and on-time work, specializing in heavy civil construction that includes earthwork, concrete work, steel erection, and more. The ideal person will be highly organized, self-motivated, have a working knowledge of construction equipment and techniques, drawings and specifications, building materials, and required standards applicable to assigned projects.
Responsibilities:
Observe work activities and oversee Spencer Construction's occupational safety compliance program under the supervision of the Corporate Safety Director.
Perform safety training on various project sites in accordance with 29CFR 1910, 1926 OSHA's General Industry Standards.
Conduct incident investigations and recommend corrective action plans.
Obtain mandated certifications relevant to company projects and functions.
Serve as a liaison with Human Resources on safety-related matters.
Develop and perform safety compliance inspections.
Train and coach employees in safety and safety standards.
Identify hazards and provide corrective action recommendations.
Track near misses and incidents, reporting to management and contractors.
Provide input into the company's overall health and safety programs.
Attend meetings with owners, general contractors, and subcontractors.
Comply with Spencer Construction safety initiatives.
Any other duties assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities:
Associate degree in Occupational Safety and Health or related field, or equivalent job experience (3 years' experience in an occupational safety and health compliance position).
At least 1 year experience implementing and overseeing safety programs.
Valid and unrestricted driver's license.
Experience managing multiple projects and time appropriately.
Ability to travel to various project sites (85-95%).
Preferred Skills and Abilities:
3 years' experience in safety compliance programs.
Experience in the construction industry.
Current OSHA 500 certification.
Knowledge of consensus standards (EM 385, ANSI, NFPA, ASTM).
Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Bluebeam, Adobe, and other software.
Public speaking, coaching, teaching, and training skills.
Fork-lift and/or aerial lift training.
Accident investigation and OSHA 300 logs knowledge.
Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
This position operates at professional construction sites, requiring the ability to communicate verbally, read printed materials, and maintain attention despite interruptions. The role involves lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and navigating construction sites safely.
