Overview In accordance with education-based athletics, Assistant Coaches will work with Head Coaches to develop an effective coaching program plan which includes skill development, practice planning, supervision of all levels of the sport, focusing on individual and team growth while instilling the highest ideals of character. Assistant Coach will effectively communicate with Head Coach, student‑athletes, parents, and administration.
Terms of Employment 12‑month temporary position, non‑exempt. Stipend available. Exemption status: Non‑Exempt.
Education and Work Experience
Teachers or certified professional educators employed by the local Board of Education.
Persons certifiable as professional educators by the State Department of Education per 13A.12.01.
Credentialed coaches who meet the following requirements:
Eligible to hold a Maryland certificate under COMAR 13A.12.01.
Possess a MPSSAA/MSDE Coaching Certification.
Completed two years of successful coaching as an emergency coach.
Spent the previous year as a successful emergency coach at the school of hire.
Essential Job Functions
Be knowledgeable of the contents of the Charles County Public Schools Extra‑Curricular Handbook and enforce all athletics policies.
Assist head coach/sponsor with pre‑season meetings and report directly to them.
Set an example of good moral and physical behavior, and make recommendations for improvements, new equipment, etc.
Report to practice thirty minutes before announced time on non‑school days; secure building during and after each practice and game.
Help keep the coach’s office clean.
Inform players of responsibilities, enforce all rules, teach fundamentals, promote sportsmanship, and check equipment for damage.
Ensure all players meet eligibility requirements of MPSSAA and the Charles County Board of Education.
Provide the athletic director/principal with all pertinent certifications.
Supervise every minute of all practices and activities, and assume responsibility for conduct and well‑being of each player on trips.
Delegate duties to student managers while retaining responsibility for their actions.
Attend varsity games, coach’s meetings, clinics, and complete school records for each sport.
Assist head coach with budget requests and special honors lists.
Collect and check all equipment; inventory must be turned in to the athletic director/principal.
Environmental Factors & Physical Requirements The employee must have ordinary ambulatory skills to visit other locations and must be able to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10–50 pounds. Requires good hand‑eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, and visual acuity for keyboard use. The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
