Position Summary:
Under direct supervision and within an established scope of practice, assists the provider with specialized patient care, assist with examinations, treatments, and special procedures of patients and preparing patients for specialized exams as directed by San Ysidro Health policies and procedures in a medical office or clinic setting. Position encompasses assistance amongst medical specialties, requiring a strong understanding of administrative and clinical workflows to effectively support specialty health care providers, manage patient flow, scheduling and patient education. MA Level 3 is expected to perform the core functions of MA Level 2 with the addition of specialized technical and scheduling functions specific to their medical specialty.
Essential Functions of the Job:
Upholds San Ysidro Health's Policies and Procedures, Core Values and competencies and applicable state, federal and local laws. Perform routine patient care functions as prescribed by licensed health care providers following established clinical protocols and policies and procedures within defined scope of education, training and responsibilities. Assists assigned physician(s) and/or other health care professional(s).
Clinical Duties: Clinical Intake: Completes clinical intake following DHCS and SYH Guidelines. This includes vital signs & measurements, questionnaires, documenting patient history, reconciling medications, reconciling immunization history. Completes daily chart preparation for medical appointments by reviewing the care plan in the provider chart note and/or referral notes; displays the ability to identify overdue health maintenance items, review referral orders, gather provider chart notes, and identify vaccine opportunities. Scheduling patient appointments and managing work queue request and in-basket messages. Prepares patients for examinations with proper caps, drapes and supplies Cleans and sanitizes exam room after each patient Assists with minor procedures, biopsies, wound cultures and treatments. Prepare patient for examination, procedures and treatments specific to the specialty Collects specimens (blood, urine etc.) labeling appropriately and perform basic in-clinic lab POCT as needed. Administers injections or medications after completion of 10 hours of medication management training Performs basic point of care test, EKGs, hearing and visual acuity Applies principles of aseptic technique and infection control as directed by the Infection Control policy and procedures Maintains exam room inventory and replenishes medical supplies and materials throughout the day as needed. Maintains inventory logs Participates and responds, when assigned to clinical emergency codes Autoclave: cleaning, processing, sterilizing and checking of instruments and maintaining logs. Assists with specialized procedures and use of equipment as appropriate for the assigned specialty (such as downloading data from continuous glucose monitoring systems). Administrative Duties:
Documents pertinent patient information, procedures and patient responses in patients' medical record, following established SYH guidelines and maintaining patient confidentiality Schedules and rescheduling patient appointments Updates patient medical records Verifies insurance information Manage messages and relay results or important information to patient with written instruction from provider, following message management guidelines- staging and routing Collaborates with the referrals department to gather information about the status of specialty referrals and prior authorizations. Maintains medical supplies and inventory and verify no expired supply in stock Participates in ongoing clinical outreach and in reach to meet the clinical care gap standards Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
Must be able to travel to multiple clinical locations to provide provider continuity and or cross coverage with different providers and or departments within Ambulatory Care. Practices customer service standards as defined by SYH and specified clinic Anticipates the customer's needs, takes proactive steps to meet those needs, by listening and problem solving Promptly responds to alarms and patient requests Facilitates the customer's ability to utilize resources Assures a clean, orderly, and functional work environment Works collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives Manages difficult or conflict situations constructively and seeks appropriate assistance Takes accountability for own actions Actively participates in departmental professional development activities Adheres to SYHealth Attendance Policy Assist in training new hires, transfers and externship students Prior Authorization Adhere to the Medical assistant job description Always maintain a high level of communication through proper channels Works collaboratively with Specialty Providers to identify better pathways for delivery of care. Education Required (Minimum level of education):
High School diploma or GED preferred Completion of a course of study consistent with the requirements for Medical Assistants as specified by the Medical Board of California. Certifications/Licenses Required:
Current BLS for Healthcare Provider awarded by American Heart Association Experience Required (Minimum level of experience):
Minimum 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant or recent work history in a Specialty MA role setting including but not limited to; Cardio, Endo, Hem, ID, GI Neph, Pulm, Rheum, Opt, Pod, Accu, Allg, Immun. Completion of externship required by Medical Assisting Program Verbal and Written Skills Required to perform the Job:
Bilingual in Spanish, Tagalog, or Arabic language preferred. Ability to read, write and comprehend medical information and terminology. Ability to effectively present information, both verbal and written Technical Knowledge and Skills Required to Perform the Job:
Demonstrated ability to use computer and Electronic medical records Demonstrated ability to use wheelchair, EKG, gurney table, vital machine, pulse oximeter, autoclave Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Continuous standing/walking/twisting Prolonged sitting Occasionally lifts, pushes and/or transfers patients Exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness) Ability to work a varied, 40 hours per week schedule to include evenings and/or weekends, between the hours of 8 AM to PM Reliable transportation necessary for occasional traveling to assist with providing coverage at SYH clinics within San Diego County
