Job Description

Arlington County's Public Library is seeking temporary Substitute Pages to support permanent staff in providing services to patrons of all ages and backgrounds. These positions help staff with sorting and processing of returned materials, shelving materials in order, and pulling items from shelves to fill holds or for maintenance.
Responsibilities
Specific duties include: Shelving library materials according to the Dewey Decimal system and/or alphabetically; Sorting returned books into carts in preparation for shelving; Checking in books from book drops and clearing patron records when materials are returned; Pulling and processing items from shelves to meet patron holds; Assisting in removing outdated materials from shelves as directed by professional library staff; and Assisting in routing books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials to appropriate library branches and sections. The ideal candidate will have the following:
A strong desire to support the County's public libraries and their patrons; The ability to quickly troubleshoot and problem-solve issues and thrive in a teamwork-oriented environment; Strong organizational skills; and A desire to create a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone. Qualifications
Selection Criteria
Minimum : Completion of the requirements from graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate, or the equivalent.
Substitution : Additional experience may be substituted for up to two (2) years of high school on a year for year basis.
Desirables : Preference may be given to applicants with the following experience:
Working in a library or bookstore setting; Stocking, reshelving or reorganizing products or items as a major work responsibility; and/or Answering routine questions in a customer service setting.
Special Requirements
A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Additional Information
Work hours and location : Schedules vary in days and hours of work, from a few hours up to 20 per week. Evening and weekend hours can be expected. Assignment location varies between Central and branch libraries.
Must be able to push heavy book carts, lift 25 lbs., and bend, stand for extended periods of time.
