Base pay range

$32,339.00/yr - $58,854.00/yr

Summary

The Dental Assistant performs a wide range of intra-oral dental procedures associated with various phases of restorative, prosthetic, periodontal, endodontic, oral surgery, implant placement and restoration procedures and provides chairside assistance, fully anticipating the dentist's needs for all instruments, materials, and services using four-handed techniques. Sets up operatory and/or surgery suite for planned dental procedure and cleans dental unit for timely turnover.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

  • All applicants must meet the requirements of the position by the time the position closes
  • Citizenship: Citizen of the United States
  • (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3 - section A - paragraph 3g - this part.) Experience and Education
  • Six months experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work - or provides familiarity with the work
  • OR Education: Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)
  • Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying
  • Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75
  • Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence: Successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) OR successful completion of CODA-accredited courses and examinations
  • Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for certification of radiologic competence may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate dental assistant
  • Certification in basic life support methods is highly desirable; DANB certification is not required but is highly desirable for the appointment of Dental Assistants up to and including the full performance level
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English
  • Grandfathering provisions may apply to current VA employees in this occupation

Grade Determinations

Knowledge of Current Professional Dental Assistant Practices: experience must require KSAs (core competencies) associated with current practice. Evidence includes graduation from a CODA-accredited program or relevant work experience in dental settings.

Duties

  • Chairside assisting for intra-oral procedures using four-handed techniques
  • Set up operatory and/or surgery suite and maintain cleanliness for turnover
  • Pass instruments safely, accurately, and efficiently
  • Assist with placement of temporary crowns and bridges; consider dental anatomy in procedure completion
  • Triages dental emergencies and coordinates care with clinical staff
  • Operate dental X-ray equipment for intra- and extra-oral radiographs; ensure diagnostic quality and safety
  • Support patient service: respond to questions, provide service recovery, and maintain courtesy
  • Infection control and equipment sterilization: set up/clean operatories, disinfect and decontaminate instruments and materials
  • Clerical: assist with scheduling, reminders, and phone calls; manage patient flow
  • Manage patient information confidentially per HIPAA and follow computer security regulations
  • Patient safety: assist with transfers and patient education; participate in safety and patient identification procedures
  • Provide post-operative and preventive dental care education to patients
  • Maintain and document vital signs as needed, and perform basic radiographic and laboratory functions
  • Other duties as assigned
