Maintenance Worker II – Waste Management

Center for Digital Governance. Position is full‑time, permanent, safety‑sensitive, and represented.

Position Overview

This role involves manual labor in the maintenance of the Waste Management Services Division. Responsibilities include general labor, customer interaction, equipment operation, and supervision of junior workers as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Shovel, clean, and maintain facilities, equipment, buildings, and grounds.
  • Guide and assist customers with safe disposal and recycling of solid waste following established policies.
  • Inspect customer vehicles before and after loading to ensure acceptability of waste.
  • Direct traffic in and out of recycling centers, landfills, and other working areas.
  • Operate and maintain equipment such as compactor units, utility carts, backhoes, forklifts, loaders, bulk metal trucks, utility cart vans, skid steers, and light trucks.
  • Perform residential delivery, repair, and replacement of recycling carts throughout the County.
  • Handle warehouse duties: receipt, storage, loading, cleaning, and repair of recycling cart inventory.
  • Perform scheduled and emergency overtime work and may provide leadership for a small group of lower‑grade workers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • At least one year of experience in Public Works/Waste Management, including operation of loaders, roll‑off trucks, light trucks, and manual labor in harsh conditions.
  • Valid commercial Class B motor‑vehicle operator’s license (or ability to obtain within six months).
  • Medical certificate for CDL learner’s permit and ability to obtain a Class B CDL within six months of hire.
  • Safety‑sensitive background: subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and alcohol testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating loaders, backhoes, roll‑off trucks, light trucks, bulk‑metal trucks, utility cart vans, and skid steers.
  • Proficiency in power tools and equipment operation.
  • Strong customer‑service communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work mandatory overtime, including weekends.
