DEFINITION

Under direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of cleaning and custodial duties during evening hours including cleaning, waxing, polishing and shampooing asphalt tile, cement, terrazzo and carpeted floors; clean and maintain classrooms, offices, buildings and other District facilities in an orderly and secure condition.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Incumbents in the Custodian II classification perform a variety of cleaning and custodial duties including cleaning carpeted areas. They are assigned to the District Office or work as a part of a traveling custodial crew at two or more assigned schools during later evening hours to assist those using school facilities and assure security of facilities. Incumbents in the Site Custodian classification perform custodial and minor maintenance duties independently and perform varied duties in assisting pupils, teachers and other users of assigned school facility. Incumbents in the Custodian I classification perform a variety of cleaning and custodial duties during an evening shift as part of a crew at assigned crew.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

1. Sweep, mop, scrub, seal, wax, polish, vacuum and shampoo carpeted areas and tile, cement and terrazzo flooring; remove and apply finishes as required.

2. Operate floor care equipment including buffers, wet and dry vacuums and carpet shampoo machines and maintain equipment in good working order.

3. Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, buildings and other District facilities in an orderly and secure condition.

4. Turn out lights and secure area by locking doors, windows and gates and by activating alarm system.

5. Assist in testing cleaners, detergents, waxes and other agents.

6. Clean restroom toilets, sinks and mirrors.

7. Dust, wash and polish furniture and woodwork.

8. Empty and clean waste receptacles.

9. Wash windows, walls and chalkboards.

10. Clean drinking fountains.

11. Polish metal work.

12. Fill paper and soap dispensers and replenish supplies.

13. Replace light bulbs as assigned.

14. Move, arrange and set up furniture and equipment for sporting or special events and meetings.

15. Raise, lower, fold and store flags.

16. May perform general groundskeeping work around the school site such as weeding flower beds, raking leaves, edging and watering lawns.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

Knowledge of:

1. Methods, materials and equipment used in cleaning, waxing, polishing and shampooing various types of floor surfaces.

2. Methods, materials and equipment used in custodial activities.

3. Basic safety practices related to custodial activities.

Ability to:

1. Clean, wax, polish and shampoo asphalt tile, cement, terrazzo and carpeted floors.

2. Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, buildings and other District facilities in an orderly and secure condition.

3. Learn and maintain cleaning schedules of assigned areas.

4. Operate various electrical cleaning equipment including floor care equipment.

5. Perform moderate to heavy physical labor.

6. Work effectively without close supervision.

7. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

8. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

9. Drive between work assignments as scheduled.

Training and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year responsible custodial experience involving floor care duties.

Licenses:

Possession of a valid California Driver's license and the ability to meet and maintain qualifications for District vehicle insurance coverage.

Working Conditions:

Indoor and outdoor environment; subject to lifting and moving heavy objects, climbing ladders and contact with cleaning agents and chemicals.
