Overview
Lead, Thermal Mechanical Engineer (Space Systems) with L3Harris Technologies. Role focuses on thermal design, analysis, and test of optical systems operating in harsh space and ground environments. The candidate will lead multidisciplinary teams, mentor junior engineers, and interface with customers and suppliers. Responsibilities
System level thermal design & development, payload level integration and test, and risk mitigation for space-based environments Perform thermal design and analysis on complex mechanical hardware (precision mechanisms, electro-mechanical devices, spacecraft mechanism design, electronics packaging, deployable mechanisms, avionics, ground-based systems) Create and analyze design concepts using thermal analysis software and FEA Define and establish the technical approach to meet objectives Direct, coordinate, and assist engineering teams to meet objectives Support requirements derivation and verification, system architecture development, loads derivation, trade studies, design sensitivity/optimization, and documentation; lead system test activities Organize thermal design and analysis as an IPT lead; interface with customer technical leads and management Prepare reports and presentation materials summarizing analysis results for external and internal groups, including leadership and customers Participate in and present at Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), and Technical Interchange Meetings (TIM) Interface with outside suppliers/customers and other engineering disciplines to drive designs to closure Present design details at program reviews to customers and independent reviewers Develop thermal test plans to manufacture and test payload sensor systems Support new business opportunities Mentor junior engineers Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; minimum 9 years of relevant experience. Graduate degree with 7 years of related experience; in lieu of a degree, 13 years of related experience 7+ years of professional experience using thermal analysis tools (Thermal Desktop preferred, Sinda, Flotherm, Icepak, etc.) 4+ years of technical leadership to a multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering team through requirements, design, analysis, test, hardware build, delivery and launch Professional experience with thermal analysis of mechanical and electronic systems in space, air, or ground environments Professional experience with thermal vacuum testing Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. TS/SCI Security Clearance Preferred Additional Skills
Experience with finite element analysis software Ability to support design decisions with well-documented engineering analyses Ability to analyze problems and identify root causes quickly Experience leading engineering teams from conceptual to detailed design Experience as a lead engineer, project engineer, or IPT lead is a plus Experience with Microsoft Office tools Active TS/SCI clearance Salary range disclosure: In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington, and the Greater DC, Denver, or NYC areas is $119,500.00 - $222,500.00. This is not a guarantee of compensation; final offer amount may vary based on experience and location.
