Overview

This recruitment is being conducted to fill one (1) current vacancy and one (1) anticipated vacancy. Under the general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, a Maintenance Mechanic I, II performs a variety of skilled work related to the installation, maintenance and repair of a variety of process equipment, pumps, engines and other mechanical equipment in support of the District's water treatment, distribution, collection, reclamation and composting operations. This is a flexibly staffed series and employees typically enter at the Maintenance Mechanic I level. A Maintenance Mechanic I performs routine tasks and many of the duties required of Maintenance Mechanic II, but is not expected to perform at the same skill level. A Maintenance Mechanic I exercises less independent judgment and discretion and has a narrower scope of responsibility. Upon meeting the performance standards of the higher level as designated by the division and certification requirements, an employee is flexed to the II level. If an employee enters the series at the Maintenance Mechanic II level, the employee must have the required certification, closely related experience and meet the division's competency standards. Maintenance Mechanic II is the fully experienced, journey-level class performing a wide variety of skilled tasks requiring a comprehensive knowledge of the trade. Responsibilities

Performs routine maintenance and repair work on water treatment, distribution, reclamation and sewer collection systems, and composting plant and equipment. Analyzes mechanical problems and consults equipment maintenance manuals for troubleshooting solutions and root cause analysis. Maintains, repairs, and overhauls pumps, regulators and other piping appurtenances. Builds equipment mounts, brackets, etc. utilizing welding, drilling, milling, tapping. Performs preventive maintenance work on mechanical equipment. Repairs large mechanical equipment such as screens, clarifiers, filters, grinders, centrifuges, conveyors, hoppers, air compressors, belt filter presses, boilers, numerous types of pumps, valves, gates, engines, large mobile and stationary equipment including cranes, gears/gearboxes, actuators, dampers, electric motors and other appurtenances. Maintains comprehensive electronic and manual logs of all maintenance work done on plant and distribution/collection system equipment. Assists specialists in performing a variety of electrical and electronic repairs and maintenance on process equipment. Performs a variety of shop work incidental to assigned maintenance activity including painting and cleaning of equipment, maintaining inventory of supplies and keeping shop and vehicles in clean and orderly condition. Submits requisitions for parts and material used in equipment repair; verification and documentation of materials received and completes all necessary documentation to ensure proper record keeping. Performs work in a safe manner at all times; complies with safety and health policies, procedures and practices; attends and completes all mandatory safety training courses and events; and works to insure the safety of co-workers and the general public. DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE OF AND PERFORMANCE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: Principles and techniques of repairing and maintaining water distribution, treatment, sewer collection, reclamation, and composting mechanical equipment; Theory and operation of internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems, and pumps; Electrical theory involved in working with pumps, motors and other equipment; Equipment, tools and materials used in maintaining and repairing equipment; Safety practices and procedures. ABILITY TO: Perform skilled mechanical repair work on engine pumps and other equipment; Diagnose malfunctions and determine effective courses of actions for correcting them; Safely utilize variety of tools and equipment including cranes, hoists and slings; Perform a variety of skilled work in electrical, plumbing, heating and construction areas; Maintain and prepare work records and reports; Work collaboratively and cooperatively in a team environment; Establish and maintain positive, cooperative working relationships with employees, supervisors, managers, contractors, vendors, and other internal and external customers; Operate equipment, and safety devices including various PPE, and apply proper safety procedures in hazardous environments. Physical and Environmental Requirements

Lift and carry loads weighing up to fifty pounds; Ascend and descend ladders and stairs; Tolerate physical presence at height of up to 100 feet on catwalks and walkways of large structures; Withstand periods of physical exposure to fumes, odors, dust and pollen without incapacitating adverse effects; Safely enter and leave confined spaces; Read standard text and data in print and on computer terminal screens; Speak and hear at normal conversational levels in person and over the telephone; Reach, bend and stoop and have manual dexterity to utilize and operate a variety of tools and equipment. Any combination of training and experience, which demonstrates attainment of the required knowledge and ability to perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed), typically: Education:

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Experience: Maintenance Mechanic I - One (1) year of experience performing skilled and semi-skilled mechanical work. Maintenance Mechanic II - Three (3) years of experience as a Maintenance Mechanic I or one (1) year of journey level experience in mechanical repair of industrial equipment. Required Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations: A valid California class C driver's license must be maintained at all times. Maintenance Mechanic II: CWEA Grade II Mechanical Technician Certification is required.
