The Hartford’s Employee Benefits Organization is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead AI-enabled service transformation. This role sets technical vision, evaluates future solutions, and mentors engineers to ensure scalable, cloud-native architectures and successful delivery of complex projects. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in GCP and AWS, microservices, event-driven architecture, and Agentic AI capabilities for developer productivity and workflow automation.

Mentor engineers and foster a culture of technical excellence.

Lead hands-on prototyping and problem-solving for complex challenges.

Explore emerging technologies and drive innovation across teams.

Collaborate cross-functionally to translate business needs into technical solutions.

Conduct workshops and proof-of-concepts to assess new technologies.

Required Qualifications

10+ years as Senior Software Engineer or 2+ years as Principal Engineer in large-scale transformation programs.

5+ years of direct experience with GCP and/or AWS; strong knowledge of multi-cloud ecosystems.

Expertise in scalable cloud solutions using GenAI, machine learning, and advanced analytics.

Strong understanding of DevSecOps and scaled agile methodologies.

Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field; advanced degree preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of the insurance industry.

Certifications: Google Professional Cloud Architect, AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional.

Additional Information

Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code tools (Terraform, CloudFormation).

Proficiency in microservices, API management (Swagger, Apigee, AWS API Gateway), and event-driven architecture (Kafka, Kinesis).

Hands-on experience with Agentic AI frameworks (LangChain, CrewAI, LangGraph).

Skills in prompt engineering and instruction design.

Knowledge of vector databases, knowledge graphs, and hybrid memory systems.

Familiarity with observability tools (Splunk, Dynatrace) and secure deployment practices.

Expertise in GenAI-driven test automation and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Docker/OpenShift).

Strategic thinking and ethical AI governance.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office 3 days a week

Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Compensation The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$166,560 - $249,840
