The Director of Development, Duke Health reports to the Executive Director of Development, Duke Health and develops fundraising programs and strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward grateful patients and friends of Duke Health Medicine, Surgery and Clinical Care areas, including the Departments of Dermatology, Head and Neck Surgery and Communication Sciences, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedic Surgery, Surgery, and Urology and the following centers and institutes: Duke Heart Center, Duke Transplant Center, Duke Molecular Physiology Institute, the Duke Eye Center, and James R. Urbaniak MD Sports Sciences Institute. This individual will be a fundraiser, builder, strategist, and creative and collaborative problem solver. They will work to build and enhance collaborative relationships with individuals across assigned areas and Duke Health Development and Alumni Affairs with a goal to advance fundraising. Work Arrangement
Hybrid at the discretion of the manager. First 90 days the person will be expected to be in office full-time. This position is located full time in Durham, NC. This is not a remote position. Department Preferences/Skills
Preference for academic/medical/healthcare experience. Campaign experience is desirable. A proven track record of success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding meaningful philanthropic support from individuals, foundations, or corporations. A high level of comfort and effectiveness working with high-net-worth individuals and business executives. Creative and collaborative problem solving, strong critical thinking and analytical skills. High energy, self-confidence, optimism, and the ability to perform in a high-expectation environment. Superior oral and written communication skills; ability to engage with a wide range of audiences including senior administration, donors, prospects, colleagues, staff, physicians, faculty, and other constituents. Ability to navigate a matrixed organization and thrive in a complex academic medical environment. Self-starter with a sense of urgency, clear priorities, and adaptability for leading through changing circumstances and cross-boundary collaboration. Strong collaboration, goal and task management, information seeking, judgment, and leadership abilities. Some travel and flexible work hours may be required. Minimum Qualifications
Education
– A bachelor's degree is generally required with communications, analytical and organizational skills. Experience
– Five (5) years of progressive fundraising experience in a related organization with a proven track record in major gifts. Campaign experience is desirable. Or An Equivalent Combination Of Relevant Education And/Or Experience. Be Bold
Work Performed
Fundraising 70% Grow and manage a portfolio of prospects capable of making gifts of $100k or more, focusing on grateful patients and their families. Identify and qualify prospects, develop relationships, craft gift strategies with faculty and leaders, solicit major gifts, and close gifts. Coordinate stewardship and recognition of donors’ philanthropy. Collaborate with Duke Health fundraising teams to ensure comprehensive coverage of prospects and donors. Draft proposals and materials; assist with publicity for important gifts, programs, accomplishments, or events. Strategic Planning and Program Implementation 20% Build partnerships across the organization and develop strategies to support campaign priorities and Duke Health’s missions. Develop annual and long-term philanthropy goals for assigned areas; identify and prioritize funding needs; stay informed on institutional programs. Plan and coordinate cultivation events or programs; collaborate with colleagues on Duke Health fundraising teams. Portfolio Development and Management 10% Maintain and manage a portfolio of major gifts prospects; coordinate with Gift Records to ensure proper gift processing and recognition. Develop contact reports and enter moves into tracking databases; collaborate with colleagues across the institution on multi-interest prospects. Follow best fundraising and operational practices for Duke Health Development & Alumni Affairs. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
