Utility Maintenance Specialist I/II/III- Wastewater Are you looking for a career change? This job has room to grow for people just joining the workforce or experienced workers changing careers. You will work with a small crew on installing, scoping, fixing and maintaining city-owned utility pipes. If you do not have your CDL yet, assistance to obtain one will be provided over the first year with the team.

Responsibilities

Under specified supervision, perform scheduled maintenance and emergency repairs of water and sanitary sewer main lines, water service lines, valves, fire hydrants, manholes, and main line valve boxes. Be on-call and assist with after-hour emergencies (water line breaks, sanitary sewer overflows, customer service calls, blockages) and perform locates as needed. Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs on water and wastewater pipelines. Operate heavy and light equipment for water and sanitary mainline repairs (backhoes, frontend loaders, shoring equipment, dump trucks). Perform CCTV/video inspections of sewer main lines to observe flow, restrictions, root intrusion, and integrity of the system. Operate jet or jet/vacuum units to clean main lines and remove debris; use for potholing and watermain breaks as needed. Monitor and maintain water main line valves; adjust and repair damaged valve boxes and manholes. Perform fire hydrant flushing, maintenance, repairs and scheduled flows; conduct air-vacuum valve maintenance. Inspect grease and sand-oil interceptors for local businesses. Follow, prepare and generate standard operating procedures; use appropriate PPE. Assess and track equipment condition for asset management; obtain quotes for procurement, replacement, and budget planning. Perform shop, equipment and yard maintenance; may serve on-call for snow removal; may work varying schedules or overtime. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Utility Maintenance Specialist I

— High School diploma or GED. Utility Maintenance Specialist II

— High School diploma or GED; one year of utility maintenance/repair experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Utility Maintenance Specialist III

— High School diploma or GED; three years of utility maintenance/repair experience, preferably in water and wastewater operations. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Licensing and Certification

Specialist I

— Valid Colorado Class B CDL with safe driving record and tanker and air brake endorsements, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Specialist II

— Valid Colorado Class A CDL with safe driving record;

Required:

Class I Water Distribution or Class I Sewer Collection Certification. Specialist III

— Valid Colorado Class A CDL with safe driving record;

Required:

Class II Water Distribution or Class II Sewer Collection Certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of City policies, procedures and goals; knowledge of laws and safety related to vehicle operations, construction tools and equipment. Skill in operating assigned equipment safely; ability to operate a motor vehicle safely; basic mathematical calculations; Ability to follow written and verbal instructions; build positive working relationships; consistently follow safety instructions. Ability to learn procedures for handling asbestos pipe, excavation, trench and traffic control safety, fall protection, confined space and PPE; strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to read and interpret city streets signs and utility GIS/locator maps; ability to complete basic paperwork; proficiency with standard office equipment and applications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities by Level

Utility Maintenance Specialist II

— Knowledge of maintenance/repair techniques for water and wastewater infrastructure; experience with heavy equipment operation; ability to read blueprints and locate maps; safe use of gas detectors for confined spaces; adaptable to changing priorities. Utility Maintenance Specialist III

— Knowledge of department organization and priorities; ability to lead crews, prepare advanced utility capital project reports, and draw work zone traffic control plans; ability to supervise with minimal oversight and manage projects on time and within budget.

Physical and Mental Requirements

Position requires listening, speaking, sitting, standing, walking on uneven surfaces; reaching, bending, climbing, kneeling and repetitive hand movements. Lifting/carrying/pushing 50+ pounds. May work in confined spaces and near heavy traffic. Exposure to fumes, dust, chemicals, and loud noises. Outdoor work in various weather. May require climbing ladders and operating power tools. Examinations may include written, oral, practical assessments. Background checks and pre-employment screenings may be required.

Examinations and Screening

Pre-employment background investigations, including driving record checks and drug screening, may be conducted as required for the position.
