DEPUTY COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR- IOWA STATE SENATE REPUBLICAN CAUCUS STAFF
This is a full time, year-round position for a Deputy Communications Director on the Iowa Senate Republican Caucus staff.
Responsibilities for this partisan Republican deputy communications director position include demonstrating superior communication skills, both verbally and in writing; facilitating communication with constituents, media outlets, and organizations; and managing and building interpersonal relationships on our team with elected officials and their constituents.

Job Summary: Provides communications and media relations support for Republican State Senators at the Iowa Capitol working under the direction of the Communications Director and supervised by the Staff Director. The Deputy Communications Director must be highly motivated and able to perform tasks with limited direct supervision in a very fast‑paced environment. In addition, this individual must possess excellent writing, editing, technological, interpersonal, and political skills to interact with media, elected officials, and constituents.
Essential Job Functions:
Assist with social media, website management, and the overall web presence of the Iowa Senate Republicans
Manage statewide and local press for senators, including publicizing activities and events
Compile weekly newsletter articles for senators for their own use in newsletters or forums
Send out weekly email newsletters on behalf of senators for constituents and media outlets
Compile daily email of news articles and relevant news for senators and staff
Manage senator photo requests and photo news releases
Compile senator biographical information
Maintain media distribution lists
Serve as a liaison between members of the media and senators
Write press releases for senators
Assist senators in scheduling media interviews, when needed
Assist senators in writing letters to the editor and op‑ed pieces, when needed
Assist senators in writing talking points and speeches, when needed
Assist with constituent responses, as necessaryOther duties, responsibilities, and activities as assigned
Additional Job Functions:
Will demonstrate knowledge of rules and floor operations of Iowa Senate.
Maintains exemplary customer service with legislators, coworkers, and the public.
Works a flexible schedule that includes partial compensatory time.
Demonstrate oral, visual, and written communication skills with superior reading comprehension and adherence to detail.
Ability to contribute on a team, provide exemplary customer service, and work a flexible schedule that includes partial compensatory time.
Preferred candidates will possess a working knowledge of the legislative process with two years of professional experience in a field related to media relations, legislative affairs, public policy, issue advocacy, government affairs, association management, or public service.

BA/BS 4‑year degree from an accredited University or College or equivalent experience.
Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and oral, and possess excellent writing skills. Be detail‑oriented.

Temperament to communicate with a wide variety of personalities in a tactful, pleasant and professional manner. Basic understanding of office‑related computer software programs and media programs.
