The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill two non-permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 2 positions in Morton, WA. The selected candidates will assist with the area’s maintenance and repair of the state highways and highway structures to ensure the traveling public’s safety. Under the direction of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor and Highway Maintenance Worker 3, these journey level positions will serve as members of the regional maintenance organization and will perform asphalt and concrete maintenance, traffic control, repair and installation of guardrail and signs, and culvert and drainage maintenance. Working in the maintenance area requires responsible, safety-minded individuals to perform a variety of skilled labor tasks and operate highway equipment and tools. These opportunities are perfect for someone who enjoys working with their hands, knowing their work is done on roadways and in a variety of weather conditions.
What to Expect
These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic; HMW2 may work at elevated heights above 25 feet over land or water. Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. Typical schedules are day or night shift, Sunday through Wednesday or Wednesday through Saturday, for 4, 10-hour days. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within these roles, the Highway Maintenance Workers will:
Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt and synthetic materials.
Perform drainage maintenance; sign maintenance and repair; guardrail, fence and impact attenuator installation and repair.
Perform tree removal and vegetation management.
Track, document and report daily work activities, account for inventory and inventories highway section.
Perform snow and ice control, including application of anti-icing compounds to road surface with truck mounted equipment, loading trucks, hauling materials such as sand, gravel and other items, and maintaining stockpile sites.
Design and set up traffic control; full road or bridge closures; perform traffic control; and conduct moving and stational traffic control operations.
Operate Class A, B and C highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment List (TEF) for highway maintenance.
Act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools.
Qualifications
To be considered for these opportunities, the following are required:
Highway Maintenance
Practical knowledge of highway maintenance practices including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.
Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
Equipment Operation
Proficiency in operating and maintaining a variety of Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles in accordance with WSDOT standards.
Demonstrated ability to safely transport heavy equipment and materials between job sites.
Traffic Control & Work Zone
Knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and use of cones/barrels.
Safety Awareness & Compliance
Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling.
Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
Technical & Administrative Proficiency
Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g., HATS, WZDB, TSMS).
Proficient in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office and email communication.
Teamwork
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently in the field.
Capable of leading a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, demonstrating sound decision-making and leadership skills.
Respectful Workplace
Demonstrated commitment to learning and growth.
The ability to take action to meet the needs of others.
In addition to the above, the following are also required:
A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles or Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N endorsement.
Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand‑by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Ability to obtain a Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License.
Ability to obtain and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification.
Ability to obtain a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card.
Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to respond to assigned duty station with 45 minutes of an afterhours callout.
Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Winter Operations Expertise
Demonstrated ability to perform snow removal and anti-icing operations.
Skilled in safely and efficiently operating plow trucks and the application of de‑icing materials to maintain roadway safety during winter weather events.
Local Area Knowledge
Familiarity with regional geography, road networks, and environmental conditions to support effective maintenance and response activities.
Maintenance Operations Proficiency
Comprehensive experience across multiple maintenance disciplines demonstrating versatility.
Ability to perform a broad range of roadway, facility, and equipment maintenance tasks.
Important Notes
This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) non-permanent vacancies and may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
These are non-permanent opportunities, expected to last up to six (6) months.
