Vascular Sonographer The Department of Surgery is seeking a

Vascular Sonographer . The Vascular Sonographer will perform various noninvasive laboratory diagnostic tests of venous and arterial disease. The individual will be responsible for obtaining a brief relevant medical history by interview and review of current or old records, documenting findings in the patient’s laboratory chart, and discussing results with the referring physician as required. The role is performed under the direct supervision of the Technical Director of the Vascular Laboratory, who reports to the Medical Director.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Perform carotid arterial disease assessment by duplex ultrasound imaging.

Evaluate possible deep and superficial venous insufficiency with duplex ultrasound.

Assess deep venous obstruction using duplex ultrasound imaging.

Assess upper and lower extremity arterial disease using Doppler, blood pressure cuff occlusion technique, and/or duplex ultrasound scanning.

Assess lower extremity arterial disease at rest and after treadmill exercise when indicated; small arterial disease may be evaluated with photo plethysmography (PPG).

Assess renal and mesenteric arterial disease by duplex ultrasound imaging.

Assess abdominal arterial aneurysmal disease by duplex ultrasound imaging.

Prepare billing vouchers and record, file information with appropriate billing offices.

Maintain the laboratory in good working condition and manage laboratory supplies; tests are performed for both outpatients and inpatients of Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Formulate preliminary interpretations of test data, documenting them in the patient’s medical records when appropriate.

Provide knowledge of indications, performance, and reliability of tests to advise physicians on appropriate testing.

Assist with correlation of all Vascular Lab examinations with the Gold Standard and with the International Accreditation Council (IAC) accreditation process.

Help educate patients, staff, Vascular Fellows, Medical and Surgical House Staff, and students in ultrasound basics, anatomy, and physiology.

Actively participate in ultrasound student and Vascular Fellow training, education, and scanning opportunities during their rotation.

Contribute to the organization, planning, and distribution of the Vascular Lab operational schedule with the Lead Sonographer and Technical Director.

Collaborate with the Technical Director and noninvasive vascular lab staff on continual development and implementation of policies and procedures mandated by the IAC Vascular board.

Perform day-to-day operations of the vascular lab when the Technical Director is absent. The primary purpose is clinical diagnostic service for Johns Hopkins patients, but equipment may also be utilized in clinical research projects. The Vascular Sonographer may perform tests for research and participate in clinical research projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers is required, or must be obtained within one year of employment. If not currently an RVT, graduation from an accredited sonography program is required.

A minimum of 12 months of full-time clinical vascular testing experience with at least 600 noninvasive vascular examinations performed.

Ability to assist patients on and off the examination table and position patients for studies.

Ability to periodically lift, push, position, and move large ultrasound equipment to perform bedside tests.

Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high‑school diploma or equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
