Job Summary Maintains the fish population for the Quinault Nation through the cultivation and rearing of fish. Performs collection and handling of brood stocks and other hatchery duties.

Essential Functions

Performs and assists in trapping fish, spawn taking, incubating eggs and raising fish; and team maintenance of hatchery facilities, equipment, and grounds.

Performs collection and handling of brood stock; weighs and sorts eggs; attends to eggs and fry in incubators; prepares food and feeds fish according to established protocols and procedures.

Recognizes and prevents disease and administers prophylactic treatments as directed.

Collects and records data such as sample counts, water quality information, feed records, weight and size gains, medications, and tag recoveries.

Assists in the cleaning of ponds, troughs, trays, screens and racks; mend nets and traps; facilities, grounds and equipment maintenance; operates a variety of mechanical equipment.

Participates in regular meetings to ensure communication between staff and fisheries‑related activities.

Establishes and maintains an effective system of communication within the organization and builds and fosters effective working relationships with others.

Enhances professional growth and development through participation in seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences.

Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Four (4) years of experience in fisheries management.

A combination of relevant education and related work experience may be considered.

Forklift certified.

Valid driver’s license is required.

Must be able to successfully pass a background screening/investigation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:

Traditional forms of government and tribal customs and traditions.

Applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.

Various species of fish; life cycles of hatchery‑raised species.

Hatchery operations and treatment for common fish diseases and parasites.

Techniques related to trapping of fish and rearing and planting of young fish.

Operation and maintenance of hatchery equipment, including watercraft and motors.

Skill in:

Performing chemical analysis of hatchery water.

Maintaining operating and biological records.

Office software and industry‑related applications.

Operation of forklift, zoom boom, and watercraft.

Ability to:

Communicate effectively in written and oral form.

Interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.

Analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.

Make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.

Work in a fast‑paced environment and meet deadlines.

Physical Demands & Work Environment Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and lift up to 25 pounds. The employee occasionally is required to sit and lift up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and clarity of vision at long distance.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in an indoor/outdoor setting with regular exposure to natural weather conditions; dust, fumes, airborne particles, and/or allergens; hazardous/moving equipment or machinery; some use of protective clothing, equipment, devices, materials is necessary. Employee may be exposed occasionally to excessive noise. Standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground. Overnight travel, evening, and/or weekend work is occasionally required.
