Surgical Technologist - Surgical Services (Main Operating Room) Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and Physician, performs the technical functions directly related to surgical asepsis, instrument preparation and presentation during surgical cases. Uses judgment to independently perform various activities related to the effective preparation of instruments prior to, during and following completion of operating room cases. The OR Technician provides care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by supporting shared leadership, evidence based practice and Magnet's five models of care in clinical practice.

Duties & Responsibilities

Follows established operating room policies and procedures.

Assists in the care, maintenance, distribution and control of equipment and supplies, both sterile and unsterile, used in operating procedures.

Acts as a Scrub Attendant: arranging sterilized articles, handing/passing instruments and dressing materials, and maintaining sterility and table order.

Completes sponge, needle, and instrument counts with RN before, during, and after surgery according to hospital policy; reports discrepancies to Charge Nurse and attending physician.

Under direction of RN prepares medications (except narcotics) on the sterile field; double checks dose with RN or MD before passing to MD during case.

Assists with infusions under direction of RN or MD; helps prepare operating room for procedures prior to surgery by procuring equipment and supplies as indicated.

Prepares for cases by checking equipment for proper functioning before and after procedures.

Participates in daily stocking of operating room supplies (e.g., suture or OMNI supplies).

Initiates cleaning of OR equipment (e.g., laser machines) on a daily basis and ensures use of plastic covers.

Assists with instrument clean‑up during routine work hours or after‑hour cases; responsible for cleaning and packing instruments on after‑hour cases.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Participates in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Surgical Technology from an approved Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation program, or

Current certification as a Surgical Technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior operating room experience.

Location & Schedule Chicago, IL, United States. Work schedule: 11 pm – 7:30 am night shift. Full‑time position, FTE 1.
