Senior R&D Engineer - System Architecture (Italy based)
We are looking for a highly skilled Hardware Architect focused on memory design, intra- and inter-chip networking and interconnect technology, system-integration, performance tuning and hardware-software interactions, with a particular focus on memory management, dataflow and networking infrastructure (remote-DMA over Ethernet, Infiniband or similar technologies). The ideal candidate has a strong background in hardware and system architecture and will design, architect, and optimize the hardware architecture that underpins Axelera’s AI acceleration platforms.

Position Overview Within the R&D System Architecture team, the candidate will contribute to the design, architecture and implementation of Axelera’s AI accelerators, focusing on memory and inter- and intra-chip network architectures. The role involves building architectural models, validating performance across AI workloads, creating detailed specifications, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to align on goals and requirements. The candidate will also participate in performance evaluation, hardware prototyping, and knowledge sharing. There is an emphasis on hardware-software interactions and remote memory access technologies.
Responsibilities
Contribute to the design, architecture and implementation of Axelera’s next-gen AI accelerators, focusing on memory and inter- and intra-chip networks.
Build architectural models, validate performance across AI workloads, and define optimal configurations.
Build advanced hardware prototypes.
Create detailed architectural specifications.
Define and perform rigorous performance evaluation tests for architectural and behavioural verification.
Collaborate with software engineers, digital designers, ML scientists, and product managers to align on project goals.
Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Contribute to the team’s knowledge base through documentation and discussions.
Collaborate with academia or industry partners on joint research projects related to AI technology.
Contribute to Axelera's IP through patent filings, whitepapers, blog posts, or publications.
Requirements
Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields with a focus on circuit design and computer architecture or high-performance computing.
Basic working knowledge of neural networks (CNNs, Transformers) for computer vision and sequence modelling.
Experience in software development.
Experience in hardware development.
Strong programming skills in Python.
Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate in a team.
Preferred: Experience with networking protocols such as RoCE or Infiniband and (Remote) direct-memory access.
Preferred: Basic knowledge of CPU, GPU, AI accelerators and SoC architectures.
Preferred: Track record of contributions to AI/ML projects, publications or patents in neural networks or system architecture.
Location This position is based in Italy. We support relocation to Bologna, Florence or Milan for talent based abroad and interested in this role.
