Reporting to the CEO and overseeing the Philanthropy Manager, the Senior Director of Philanthropy will define the vision, shape strategy, and secure the major investments that power CAC’s bold fight for policies protecting our communities and climate.
This role is for a highly‑experienced, creative fundraiser who thrives on relationship building, closing significant gifts, and cultivating a strong culture of fundraising.
You will have the autonomy and authority to design and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to exceed our nearly $2 million annual fundraising goal.
Location San Diego, CA (San Diego or Orange County – must live in the area with no in‑office requirement).
HQ: San Diego, CA.
Schedule Monday to Friday, 9 am‑5 pm.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $135,000 – $170,000 per year
401(b) with 4% match
Medical/Dental/Vision: 100% coverage for employee (dependents paid by employee)
Paid Holidays: 27 days
PTO: 15 days starting, increasing to 25–30 days with tenure
Cell phone stipend: $65/month
Transportation stipend: $100/month
Salary increase: $3,000 at 5 years, $5,000 one‑time bonus every 5 years thereafter
Key Responsibilities
Lead philanthropy strategy: design and execute a comprehensive fundraising plan.
Develop major donor relationships and close six‑ to seven‑figure gifts.
Partner with foundations, government, and corporates for multi‑year commitments.
Drive campaign and event initiatives to engage and expand donors.
Create compelling donor communications and digital engagement strategies.
Mentor and train board members in philanthropic and fundraising roles.
Supervise and grow the Philanthropy Manager and team culture.
Represent CAC at community events and public spaces.
Qualifications
15+ years of nonprofit fundraising success, growing major donor programs.
Expertise in identifying, cultivating, and closing six‑ to seven‑figure gifts.
Strategic leadership with staff supervision and board engagement experience.
Digital fluency, including AI and CRM systems.
Deep understanding of the political and climate advocacy landscape.
Commitment to equity‑centered work and justice.
