Field Crew Surveyor
– TRANSPORTATION SURVEYOR (CALTRANS)
Salary: $6,332 – $12,152 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of an alternate range when applicable.

Under the direction of a Transportation Surveyor Party Chief, incumbents perform a wide variety of professional land surveying work in a field setting. Incumbent serves as a member of a field survey crew and performs professional surveying work in Caltrans.
Eligibility may be determined by your score on the Transportation Surveyor (Caltrans) exam. New to state candidates must be on the state examination list to be eligible for this position. Please apply for the exam by searching the classification title.
Working Conditions Position located at 1031 Butte Street, Redding, Shasta County. Work is usually along highway travelways, often in remote areas, and in heavy construction zones. It requires work in adverse weather conditions, including high heat and freezing cold. The position requires heavy‑duty work clothes, safety boots and intense manual labor. Incumbent may need to clear brush with cutting tools, drive survey stakes with sledgehammers and transport supplies over steep, uneven terrain. Noise and proximity to high‑speed traffic are common.
Eligibility: Candidates must possess either an educational degree or a Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT) or Land Surveyor certificate. A copy of the degree/transcripts or LSIT or LS certificate must be submitted.
Minimum Requirements
Valid California Class C Driver’s License.
Drug screening required prior to hire.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent surveyor training/certificate.
Ability to perform physical tasks and work in hazardous conditions.
For foreign transcripts, provide a U.S. equivalency evaluation (NACES or aice‑eval.org).
