The North Florida/ South Georgia VA Healthcare System is looking for an Emergency Medicine Chief Physician to join the Medical Care Service at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center in Gainesville, FL. The Physician will provide direct patient care in the Urgent Care and/or Emergency Medicine departments.
Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program in Emergency Medicine leading to eligibility for board certification
Approved residencies include: (1) ACGME-approved; (2) AOA-approved; or (3) other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States, as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee. Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs)
PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice with certain restricted duties under supervision
Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs
Board Certified in Emergency Medicine
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Additional Requirement: Board Certification in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, or Family Medicine
Preferred Experience: Two (2) years of leadership experience at chief level, preferably in the Department of Veterans Affairs system
Board certification in Emergency Medicine is desired; however, those with board certification in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, or General Surgery will be considered if they have a minimum of five (5) years of Emergency Medicine experience

The incumbent is responsible for participation and oversight of staff physicians and NP/PA/ICT patient care performance measures, compliance, training, and performance improvement; recruitment and retention of qualified providers; participation in Medical Center committees to ensure performance measures are met; compliance with applicable rules and regulations; and participation in system redesign activities
The Chief of Emergency Medicine will also serve as a liaison between the Emergency Medicine Section and other VA specialty sections, as well as Emory Department of Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medicine Residency Training programs with the goal of eventual affiliation
The incumbent will also serve as a staff Emergency Department physician
The incumbent will be responsible for all aspects of medical care delivered to patients in the Emergency Department
It is expected that the incumbent will spend 50% of their time in a clinical role and 50% in an administrative role
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following
Representing the Emergency Department at hospital administrative and patient care meetings
Meeting with all providers in the Emergency Department regularly to review protocols and procedures for transported/transferred patients, including minor trauma victims
Monitoring established VA/VISN/Joint Commission performance measures and goals for the Emergency Department, and providing group and individual feedback to improve metrics
Developing and utilizing patient care protocols (e.g., Acute Coronary Syndrome, Stroke, Sepsis) and monitoring their effectiveness
Working with the VA Utilization Management department to monitor the preadmission screening process and its impact on Inpatient admission/observation status and related performance measures
Monitoring overall performance of all ED providers and delivering performance improvement interventions as needed
Managing ED workforce needs and budget
Collaborating with the Medicine Service Group Practice Manager to develop budgets and conduct annual needs assessments; maintaining an up-to-date schedule to ensure proper ED provider coverage
