Special Inspector – Structural Steel (Washington, DC) Company Description SZ PM Consultants, Inc. is a multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm providing construction management, inspection, and quality assurance services across the Washington, DC metropolitan region. Our team supports public and private infrastructure projects by ensuring adherence to design standards, safety regulations, and material specifications. Role Description We are seeking a qualified Special Inspector – Structural Steel to perform continuous visual inspections of steel construction activities, including welding and bolting operations. The successful candidate will verify contractor compliance with project drawings, specifications, and applicable building codes to ensure structural integrity and quality assurance. This is a full-time, on-site position requiring strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and familiarity with inspection protocols for structural steel installations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform continuous and periodic inspections of structural steel fabrication and erection, including welds, bolts, and connections, to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications. Conduct visual inspections in accordance with project acceptance criteria and applicable codes (e.g., AWS D1.1, AISC, ASTM). Review fabrication drawings, erection plans, and approved welding procedures. Verify welder and bolt installation qualifications as required by project documents. Document field observations in daily reports, noting non-conformance and corrective actions. Coordinate with contractors, engineers, and construction managers to resolve field issues. Maintain clear and detailed inspection records for project documentation and final reports. Required Skills and Abilities Strong understanding of structural steel materials, welding, and bolting inspection requirements. Ability to interpret structural drawings, specifications, and welding symbols. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate field documentation. Ability to work independently in active construction environments. Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or Construction Engineering preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in steel construction inspection or quality assurance.
