Overview
Public Safety Telecommunicator – Metropolitan Rates at UNCW. This Telecommunicator position performs technical communications work in support of public safety operations, including receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, monitoring alarms, relaying information, prioritizing calls, coordinating response procedures, dispatching public safety personnel, and maintaining logs and databases. Telecommunicators operate a variety of telecommunications and computer equipment such as multi-line phone systems, police consoles, two-way radios, scanners, and Division of Criminal Information terminals.
Minimum Education and Experience High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated competencies to perform the work. Certification as a Division of Criminal Information (DCI) computer operator or ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. Some positions may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification per the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of the integral workings of a law enforcement agency, particularly the dispatch process.
Willingness to communicate and effectively interact with the public.
Oral communication skills are required; typing is essential for the Telecommunicator role.
Typing the Daily Police Bulletin, memos for officers, and some reports are part of the responsibilities.
Ability to obtain as many details as possible when a crime has been committed to pass to the officer on the call.
Ability to rapidly check files in the computer, listen for radio traffic, telephone calls, and fire alarms, and communicate with callers.
Ability to read written orders and messages from agencies via the DCi Computer Terminal.
Required Certifications Certification as a DCI computer operator. After hire, the Telecommunicator must attend a re-certification class every two years to maintain certification.
