The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

Under direct supervision of the Scheduling Supervisor, Under direct supervision of Bowling Center supervisory personnel, the Bowling Center Attendant performs a variety of duties depending on the assignment, including handles trouble calls and performs other maintenance on bowling pinsetters, lane conditioner machine, and performs cleaning and security duties to maintain a safe, comfortable environment for all patrons. In addition, the duties for this position will include handling all sale transactions associated with bowing or billiards including cash handling and card charges. This is a key role and responsible for knowing what is happening in the entire bowling center at all times. Providing customer service for all users while maintaining a safe, comfortable environment for all patrons.
Essential Functions and Tasks
Porter Duties will include
Responsible for general daily and preventive maintenance of bowling center equipment to include pinsetters, lane conditioning machine, billiard tables, and other equipment. Performs cleanup and security duties throughout the shift. Cleaning duties include, but may not be limited to, wiping tables/counters, sweeping, mopping and/or vacuuming floors, and emptying trash, cleaning restrooms, and washing windows within the Bowling Center. Cleaning and security extend to all areas of level zero when the Student Union is closed. Enforces facility rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Works with Desk Person to responsibly operate the Bowing Center in the absence of Bowling Center supervisory staff. Respond to emergency situations based on EAP training. May be cross-trained to perform duties of Bowling Center Desk Person Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Desk Person Duties will include
Handles customer transactions at the control desk in a polite and professional manner. Answer questions from guests in person and on the phone. Prepare and initiate the start of Bowling Classes, Bowling Team Practice, Leagues, Special Events, and reservations. Operates the POS terminal, credit card machine, receipt and report printers. Works together with other Bowling Center staff to provide cleanup and security duties. Properly directs porters and maintenance staff to needed services. Responsible for proper sales and cash accountability procedures. Reports resolved and unresolved issues to Bowling Center management. Properly open and close the shift with associated reports and documentation. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Requires computer proficiency in Microsoft Office software, and event scheduling Ability to work in a fast paced, upbeat, and noisy work environment with phone and walk-in customers. Will need to acquire necessary knowledge and skills to perform trouble-shooting on pinsetter malfunctions, operation and maintenance of lane conditioning machine, along with required understanding of computer applications relative to the automatic scoring system and the tablet interface. Self-starter; able to work from a maintenance list with minimal supervision. Ability to work with chemicals, and hand/power tools, in a safe manner. Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to serve guests in a polite and professional manner. Ability to work in a fast paced, upbeat, loud, noisy environment. Ability to follow and give directions. Ability to assist with emergency situations when necessary.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The position works in a wide variety of environments including both a typical office as well as indoor facility in a program-oriented environment. The physical demands of this position are described below:
Sitting, walking, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot). Lifting and Carrying, frequently 5-10lbs, occasionally 10-15lbs.
In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday. When school is in session - may work up to, but not in excess of 20 hours per week (among all concurrent positions). When classes are not in session (i.e. summer break) may work up to, but not in excess of 40 hours per week.
Minimum Qualifications and Specifications
Must be a current matriculated SJSU student Previous customer service experience preferred. Previous experience Bowling Center or other related recreational environment preferred. Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, American Red Cross preferred, or obtain prior to first shift. Online certifications will not be accepted.
Minimum Hourly Salary: $18.00 - Maximum Hourly Salary: $20.75 This position is non-exempt from the provisions of Section 1 of the California Industrial Welfare Commission Orders.
Benefits This position is employed through the Student Union at San Jose State University which offers employees to receive 40 hours of sick pay during the calendar year.
