This position provides indirect oversight of the Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering (BSA/AML) team, ensuring quality assurance in key areas such as alerts, Currency Transaction Reports (CTRs), Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs), new membership reviews, and OFAC screenings. The Senior BSA Investigator actively participates in annual regulatory examinations and audits, identifying opportunities for process improvements and recommending enhancements to strengthen compliance. This role supports the BSA Officer by overseeing daily BSA operational tasks, enabling the Officer to focus on the strategic management and broader implementation of the BSA program across the credit union.

Principal Accountabilities And Functions

Oversees the daily BSA functions which include: OFAC, Alerts, SARs, CTRs and Quality Assurance.

Makes a working knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act and all related anti-money laundering/CFT, USA Patriot Act and OFAC regulations.

Recognizes and analyzes Verafin updates, proposes process changes, troubleshoots data issues, and assists with model tuning/validation.

Conducts quality reviews of team members’ work and reviews cases for SAR creation.

Plans, leads and conducts AML investigations into potential suspicious activity from transaction monitoring, internal referrals, subpoenas, negative news, and other sources.

Provides leadership and oversight for the technical work of the BSA team.

Analyzes team activity to ensure timely completion of work in accordance with established laws and regulations.

Provides mentorship and acts as an escalation point for team members and internal partners.

Thoroughly and timely reviews reports and investigative leads that potentially identify suspicious activity.

Monitors operational metrics to provide insight to management on business performance and recommend solutions and improvements.

Collaborates with Fraud Team Leaders on cross-department investigations and assists in answering BSA related questions.

Guides investigators on when to close cases, escalated findings, or file SARs.

Participates in special projects, working groups, and acts as a BSA/AML & OFAC Risk SME.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, typologies, and trends in AML.

Assists in reviewing and recommending updates to the BSA/AML Risk Assessment and BSA Program.

Proactively recommends and implements updates to written procedures and works with the BSA Compliance Officer to improve training materials.

Identifies recurring AML violation trends and conducts quality control reviews.

Prepares high-quality SARs and provides guidance to team members on SAR development.

Attends SAR Committee meetings to review and discuss suspicious activity cases.

Acts as an in-house BSA software expert, including Verafin, coordinating upgrades, and researching vendor updates.

Analyzes Verafin daily logs to validate data delivery and addresses discrepancies with vendors.

Assists in developing, coordinating, and facilitating AML/BSA/CFT/OFAC training programs for all credit union staff.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or related field.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in financial services investigation and/or fraud prevention roles.

Leadership experience directing and delegating team activities, performance management, career development, coaching, and mentoring.

Familiar with credit union products, services and systems.

Extensive experience supporting risk/compliance initiatives within a business.

Highly independent, organized, and able to work autonomously in a fast‑paced, time‑sensitive setting.

Equivalent combination of education and experience accepted.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Ability to communicate investigative results and evidence to stakeholders in a professional, confidential, and accurate manner.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel).

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret government regulations and compliance standards.

Strong problem‑solving skills: define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills to communicate technical and non‑technical information clearly.

Experience interacting with internal and external members, negotiating, and influencing to reach positive outcomes.

Advanced research, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.

Knowledge of AML and fraud investigations, state laws, and regulations.

Adherence to credit union policies, regulations related to BSA, USA Patriot Act and OFAC.

Working Conditions This position is based in an office environment with moderate noise levels and a typical 40‑hour workweek, Monday through Friday. Work involves prolonged periods at a computer. The role may require extended hours beyond the defined schedule. Ability to lift up to 15 lbs. is required.
