The Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains (BGCNP) is a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth across South Dakota. With locations in Brookings, Elkton, Moody County, Yankton, and Vermillion, BGCNP serves as a vital resource for children and teens, providing a safe and inclusive environment to foster growth, learning, and leadership.

The Club focuses on three core areas: Academic Success, Good Character & Leadership, and Healthy Lifestyles. Through programs such as after-school tutoring and activities promoting physical and emotional well-being, BGCNP equips young people with the tools they need to thrive.

Position Summary The Unit Director serves as the primary leader and representative of the Boys & Girls Club within their assigned community. This individual is responsible for the overall management, operations, and performance of the local Club site(s), including all Units, extensions, and community impact locations. The Unit Director ensures that daily operations align with organizational goals, policies, and safety standards while fostering a positive and inclusive Club culture. A key responsibility is to uphold and implement the five key elements of positive youth development in all interactions with youth, staff, and families. The Unit Director oversees program quality, staff supervision, community engagement, and compliance, working closely with parents, administrative leaders, and other stakeholders on matters related to youth behavior, Club events, and operational needs.

This is a smaller-capacity Club site, serving approximately 60-70 children daily, and the Unit Director will manage a team of 3 full-time direct reports as well as 20 part-time employees. The role is primarily site-based, with some flexibility to work remotely depending on organizational and community needs. The Unit Director is expected to champion and uphold the mission of the Boys & Girls Club.

Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Facility Management: Oversee daily operations and management of multiple Units, Extensions, and Community Impact Sites; ensure smooth facility operations and address youth-related situations and Club-wide needs; manage snow days and unplanned closures with appropriate staffing and safe operations; take ownership of urgent responsibilities typically handled by the administrative team.

Staff Leadership & Human Resources: Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and motivate a team of full-time and part-time staff; conduct performance reviews and improvement plans; lead regular check-ins, monthly staff meetings, and required Club trainings; ensure compliance with the 5 Key Elements of Positive Youth Development; model the Club’s core values (excellence, impact-driven work, teamwork, integrity).

Youth Development & Member Services: Monitor youth behavior and discipline plans; ensure compliance with behavior policy, special needs protocols, safety standards, and success plans; assess program effectiveness and adjust as needed; report on youth participation in outcomes (academic success, character & citizenship, healthy lifestyles).

Community Engagement & Public Relations: Represent the Club in the community (media, tours); build relationships with school personnel and educational stakeholders; engage with Club parents; collaborate with local groups to enhance services; lead recruitment and marketing to grow participation.

Event, Program, and Grant Oversight: Plan and execute special events; administer grants with alignment to objectives and reporting; contribute program content to communications; complete annual assessments required by Boys & Girls Clubs of America; evaluate and report program outcomes against deadlines.

Fiscal Accountability: Monitor budgets for staffing, events, and programs; ensure resource allocation aligns with priorities.

Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as assigned in support of the Club’s mission.

Administrative Duties and Responsibilities

Meetings & Communications: Attend required meetings (monthly all-staff, weekly one-on-one with supervisor, weekly Coordinator team meetings); lead biweekly team meetings and check-ins; ensure documentation of meetings with Unit staff.

Staff Management & Evaluation: Oversee recruitment, supervision, and evaluation of direct-report staff; develop performance tools including 60-day reviews and performance improvement plans.

Program & Membership Oversight: Monitor membership data and ensure accuracy; track youth participation across key program areas.

Budget & Grant Administration: Track budgets and ensure grant deliverables and reporting.

Youth Guidance & Parent Engagement: Resolve major discipline issues and build engagement with parents through orientations and regular updates.

Candidate Qualifications and Physical Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.

Demonstrated experience with youth from preschool through 12th grade.

Proven management and supervisory experience in a youth-serving or nonprofit environment.

Strong leadership, coaching, and accountability skills; positive, solutions-oriented mindset.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Deep understanding of youth development principles and behavior management aligned with the Club’s values of fun, supportive relationships, recognition, high expectations, and safety.

Ability to provide immediate and reflective feedback to staff; support positive youth development.

Ability to observe, interact with, and communicate with youth, staff, volunteers, and parents to ensure a safe environment.

Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods; ability to operate general office equipment.
