Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs

Summary Operate and monitor electrocardiographic equipment to perform specialized examinations, including exercise stress testing and ambulatory monitoring for arrhythmias. Identify arrhythmias, monitor tracings, and respond promptly to abnormalities.

Responsibilities

Perform full range of electrocardiograph procedures, including Holter monitoring, event monitoring, and treadmill stress tests.

Apply, operate, and troubleshoot cardiac diagnostic equipment such as SAECG, tilt table, and EKG carts.

Interpret and document EKG tracings, vital signs, and arrhythmia findings.

Provide patient education and pre‑procedure instructions.

Assist supervisors and other clinical staff in maintaining equipment and training new personnel.

Adhere to radiation safety, infection control, and workplace safety protocols.

Maintain accurate and timely records and reports.

Qualifications

U.S. citizenship (non‑citizens only if no qualified citizens are available).

Proficient spoken and written English.

At least 1 year of comparable experience in a medical instrument technician or related cardiac technology role.

Knowledge of cardiac pharmacology, acute disorders, and treatment methods.

Strong medical instrumentation skills, including proficiency with EKG, Holter, event, and stress test equipment.

Ability to provide staff training and supervise subordinate employees.

Desirable: Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/ACLS) certifications; BLS/ACLS required at GS‑6 or above.

Preferred Experience

Certified BLS and ACLS with minimum 1 year of cardiac rehabilitation and EKG experience.

Experience with SAECG, tilt table, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring.

Familiarity with cardiology storage systems and diagnostic medical equipment operation.

Pay & Schedule Base pay range:

$61,029.00



$79,343.00

per year.

Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.
