The Counselor position exists to provide professional counseling consultations, clinically informed input, Christian spiritual guidance, and emotional support to constituents (primarily over the phone) on a wide-range of needs expressed by those contacting the ministry. Emphasis exists on marriage and parenting concerns and biblical integration (representing an evangelical perspective) in this trusted role of representing Focus on the Family. Additionally, as an “aftercare coach” this position provides phone/online coaching services to couples who have attended a Focus on the Family marriage intensive. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Provides brief counseling consultations and/or crisis intervention for constituents over the phone Provides credentialed coaching services (i.e., hourly sessions) to married couples over phone/online Manages and completes a daily queue of callbacks assigned to the counselor Enters details of the calls on computer charts Is proficient (agile, intuitive, and quick) with computer systems requiring data entry, note taking, and research for informing & referring callers Utilizes time efficiently with a call/hour average within established guidelines Demonstrates a knowledge of and familiarity with Focus on the Family, community, and professional resources Refers constituents to appropriate professionals or institutions via the Focus Christian Counselors Network ( www.FocusontheFamily.com/FindaCounselor ) and other approved referral databases Offers guidance, hope, encouragement, and advice to help with grief, general life challenges, spiritual counsel, marriage, and parenting, provides special support/counsel to ministry leaders and their families, is available to consult with ministry leaders as they care for those to whom they minster Recommends Focus-approved resources and compatible outside educational materials as needed Provides a phone presence that is warm, kind, helpful, sensitive, and firm or directive as appropriate Occasionally follows-up on previous calls that may require additional consultation Provides counseling consultations to employees and their families as requested Other Duties/Responsibilities: May be interviewed and appear on air from time to time in various Focus resources in any medium Participates in workshops, seminars for FOF employees and guests In critical situations, will be available to pray with and give spiritual encouragement to FOF employees at request of Director; or be asked to serve on a critical incidents team for crisis response With additional training, may be requested to aid in phone “aftercare coaching” with couples who have attended Focus on the Family’s Hope Restored Marriage Intensive counseling program Performs other duties, including but not limited to duties as assigned, some of which may include the development and creation of a variety of copyrightable works (e.g., print, photography, film, music, visual arts, etc.) for distribution in all media and formats (such as television, radio, internet, wireless, DVD, satellite and digital) on a world-wide basis, all of which shall be for the benefit of Focus on the Family Working Environment/Physical Requirements: Office environment with high need for computer proficiency and adaptability; able to type and navigate quickly within typical Windows environment Frequent exposure to intense emotional situations Extended time on phone, at desk, and using keyboard and visual exposure to reading a computer screen while simultaneously conversing Potential and occasional necessity to work at one’s own home via phone/computer to maintain appointments, if office closes due to inclement conditions (closed door, quiet quarters, and privacy necessary in such events) JOB QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS Character/Spiritual: Exemplifies Ephesians 5:1-2, “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children and walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us...”

Pursues the Great Commission given by Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

FOF core values This role is considered a Spokesperson for Focus on the Family and should represent Focus’ position and tone at all times Personal Characteristics: Punctual, dependable, responsible Mature and responsive Strong Christian faith expressed in daily behaviors Servant, team-oriented, adaptable Warm, kind, helpful, sensitive, and firm or directive phone presence as appropriate Knowledge/Experience: Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, or marriage & family therapy A Colorado or other state license* in a mental health field (LMFT, LCSW, Clinical Psychologist, or LPC) 5 – 7 years of experience in counseling: pastoral and/or clinical Understands the integrative process as it relates to faith and ethical professional practice Extensive grasp of Scripture as it relates to counseling In-depth knowledge of FOF mission, philosophy, values, and objectives Understanding of political, social, and religious issues that impact the family Demonstrates knowledge of FOF resources *Non-licensed (i.e., pastoral)

may be considered if the individual is highly experienced and credentialed as a minister or has proven ministry leadership and counseling background. Education and experience would need to contain clinical pastoral care/education, and/or eligibility for mental health licensure in the State of Colorado *Certified coaches

with credentials meeting the coaching industry’s standards (primarily via the International Coaching Federation) may be considered
