Examples of Duties

Under general supervision, performs journeyman level installation, repair, service, and maintenance to heating, air conditioning, refrigerating, and ventilating equipment and leads or instructs lesser skilled workers.

  • Performs journeyman level installation, maintenance, service, and repair to heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigerating equipment, including window and package units, freezers, water coolers, remote controls, pumps, compressors, condensers, and related parts and assemblies. Lays out projects, evaluates and tests equipment and component operation, and determines method of repair. Replaces and disposes of refrigerant chemicals.
  • Leads or instructs lesser skilled workers and monitors activities of contractors. Inspects work both in progress and upon completion to assure quality and conformance to standards.
  • Maintains cost and operational records as required and prepares lists of parts and supplies to be requisitioned for assigned jobs.
  • Drives an automobile or light truck to transport workers and equipment to and from job sites.

Examples of Other Duties
Assists other technicians such as plumbers and electricians with large projects. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Four years' experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, air conditioning, refrigerating, and ventilating equipment

plus

at least two years of which included commercial and/or industrial units.

Related education may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required experience.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of Type I and Type II E.P.A.-approved refrigerant certification for technicians is required at the time of appointment. Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.

Conditions of Employment
Employees hired after July 1, 2022 are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System, with very limited exceptions.

Employees in this classification are designated as Emergency/Essential and may be required to work overtime with little or no advanced notice. Persons in this classification are subject to call to duty in emergencies and subject to standby duty for after-hours emergencies on a rotating basis.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification entails performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying very heavy objects, and the operation of motor vehicles, and hand and power tools. Some work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as adverse weather and electricity.

Salary

Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance
General Increases - Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated.
Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.
