Summary
The position requires performing the full range of painting tasks, including surface preparation, blending, and matching paints, as well as coating various surfaces with decorative and other effects.

Responsibilities

  • Painting interior and exterior surfaces using paint, varnishes, lacquers, sealers, and stains.
  • Preparing walls and surfaces for painting, including taping, sanding, and scraping to remove old paint, wallpaper, and similar materials.
  • Using hand and power tools for surface preparation and painting.
  • Utilizing required safety equipment while performing duties.
  • Maintaining painting equipment, tools, and power tools to ensure proper performance and quality outcomes.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Must meet Selective Service registration requirements for males.
  • Required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program.
  • Must possess a valid state‑issued driver’s license as described in the posting; a photocopy of the license is required prior to official motor vehicle operation.
  • Uniform will be provided; must wear National Park Service uniform standards.
  • Government housing is not available.
  • Minimum age: at least 18 years old, or at least 16 years old with high school graduation or an equivalent credential, or completion of a formal vocational training program, or other specified educational or employment conditions.

Qualifications

  • Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, and documentation.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Dexterity and safety competency.
  • Knowledge of materials.
  • Practices in construction and structure.
  • Technical and artistic practices.

Screenout

  • Experience performing painter worker duties under normal supervision.
  • Experience in surface repairs and preparation techniques, including degreasing, sanding, wire brushing, scraping, spackling, and puttying.
  • Experience with coating methods, techniques, and materials selection suitable for a variety of surface finishes.
  • Ability to complete projects independently with no required in‑progress check or final product review by a supervisor.

Physical Demands

The painter must be able to work at extreme heights, lift up to 10 pounds for day‑to‑day tasks, and handle materials weighing up to 40 pounds. The job requires frequent standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and using safety equipment such as harnesses and fall protection systems.

Working Conditions

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, exposing the employee to dust, spray, fumes, and variable weather conditions. Protective equipment, including safety shoes, glasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, and respirators, is required.
