General Purpose
Responsible for assisting participants in obtaining and maintaining competitive employment consistent with their vocational interests and abilities. In accordance with the Individual Placement and Supports (IPS) supported employment model, the Employment Support Specialist (ESS) will provide job development services and ongoing rehabilitation supports within the community. ESS will conduct client intakes; administer career profiles to assess job interest; collaborate with clients to develop Individual Vocational Plans to address areas needing improvement and establish an employment plan; and establish and sustain partnerships with employers in the community and alternative service providers.
Essential Functions
- Provide participants with job search services, including resume writing and interview preparation immediately upon enrollment.
- Perform job development activities to secure individualized job placements.
- Maintain a caseload of at least 20 participants while ensuring HIPAA confidentiality.
- Document all participant contacts and services provided daily in an electronic health record.
- Secure participants' pay stubs and other employment verification monthly.
- Provide personalized benefits planning and accompany clients to local benefits offices to assist with income reporting.
- Provide job supports outside of the workplace.
- Encourage participants to carry out job search and performance independently.
- Maintain a minimum of 6 face‑to‑face or virtual employer contacts per week to develop jobs for participants.
- Assist participants with case management activities as they pertain to job success.
- Maintain monthly contact with community mental health treatment providers to discuss shared participants and potential referrals.
- Provide participants with accurate information and assist them in evaluating disclosure of disability to employers.
- Help participants look for jobs that are consistent with their stated interests, strengths and preferences.
- Provide individualized follow‑along supports, including some case management, to assist clients in maintaining employment.
- Achieve a minimum of 8 job starts per year or maintain at least 20% employment on caseload.
- Assist clients in obtaining information about benefits (e.g., SSI, Medicaid) and reporting income.
- Discuss clients' preference for disclosure of psychiatric status to employers.
- Share job leads with all participants.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by Program Manager or other administrative staff.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; job development experience a plus.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong presentation and networking skills.
- Team player with strong work ethic.
- Flexible, creative and energetic.
- Spanish speaking preferred.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Scope of Responsibility & Positions Supervised
- Maintain confidentiality and security of participant information and records.
- Exercise discretion with participant records per HIPAA regulations.
- Use discretion regarding participants' eligibility for metro card incentives.
- Safeguard metro cards and technological devices.
Special Working Conditions
Field visits to various neighborhoods and boroughs of NYC.
