About the Position The Bethel Park School District Board of Directors seeks its next Superintendent of Schools. We expect the Superintendent to be someone with integrity, vision and outstanding leadership skills to lead a district of approximately 4,000 students and over 500 employees. To be considered a candidate must possess excellent communication skills; have experience in achieving and maintaining high academic performance; have expertise in developing people and is comfortable engaging with various stakeholders in the school and community. The following qualifications are not required but are desirable: public school system central office experience or experience leading a high performing educational system K‑12 building administrator experience knowledge of educational technology and best practices and competence with school finance and business management. PA superintendent letter of eligibility required at time of employment. Salary will be regionally competitive depending on qualifications and experience.

The Bethel Park Music Department is recognized as one of the leading music programs in the state being named one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association for Music Merchants. The Pittsburgh Business Times ranked the Bethel Park School District #13 among the 103 school districts in Western Pennsylvania based solely on the Pennsylvania State System of Assessment (PSSA) Test Scores and Grade 11 Keystone Exams for the past three years. According to the Business Times Bethel Park High School was ranked #14 of 112 high schools; Independence Middle School eighth graders were ranked #14 of 145 schools and seventh graders ranked #14 of 147 schools. Neil Armstrong Middle School sixth graders were ranked #14 of 193 and fifth graders #17 of 260. Bethel Park fourth graders ranked #32 out of 292 schools and third graders #28 out of 303 schools. Essential Duties
Promotes and directs the educational advancement and growth of the Bethel Park School District.
Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of the educational program; and makes recommendations to the Board regarding courses of study and extra‑curricular activities.
Recommends adoption of textbooks and other curricular materials.
Ensures the courses of study required by the state law or school board policy are being taught and making the board aware if staff is inadequate to comply with state requirements.
Visits the Districts schools, observes, provides direction and reports insufficiencies to the board.
Rates or oversees the annual rating process for teachers performance and approves unsatisfactory ratings.
Notifies all temporary professional employees of their professional quality progress and performance rating in collaboration with principals and directors.
Maintains accurate records of the certifications held by the district personnel, requests emergency teaching permits and attests to the satisfactory completions of requirements for permanent certifications.
Reports to the Secretary of Education and the Professional Standards and Practices Commission when a certified educator has been dismissed for cause of charged with crimes that may be grounds for suspension or revocation of professional certificate.
Exercises the authority to suspend employees for just cause and reports any such suspension to the Board at the next regular or special meeting.
Participates in contract negotiations.
Oversees that appropriate (and required) training is provided to staff to ensure compliance for quality and safety.
Supervises the grading classification and promotion of pupils and ensures proper records and reports of pupil progress are maintained.
Approves parent requests that pupils be excused to attend off‑site religious instruction.
Enforces child labor laws and issues work permits authorizing employment of minors.
Issues medical or religious exemptions from immunization requirements.
Manages major student/school crisis—major discipline issues, racial issues, post‑vention etc.
Approves private tutoring in place of school attendance and qualifications of tutors.
Serves as a member of the intermediate unit council advising the intermediate unit executive director.
Serves as a member of the Superintendents Advisory Board for the Vocational Technical School of record.
Provides military recruiters with lists of senior class students.
Signs various notices, convenes conferences and prepares certifications required in connection with special education services and assignments.
Maintains harmonious relationships with non‑public schools with regard to federal programs, transportation and shared‑time programs.
Provides annual and other required reports or information to the Secretary of Education regarding school district operations including suggestions for improvement and change.
Prepares the agenda and attends meetings of the Board.
Works cooperatively with the Board to develop and maintain policies and oversee implementation of the policies.
Provides general supervision of all activities and their supportive offices or agencies.
Participates in the preparation of the budget and is responsible for budgetary control.
Develops and maintains a line of communication pertaining to the school affairs between the Board staff and community.
Accepts responsibility for professionally representing the district in matters involving the administration of the schools.
Strives to improve school and community relations through contacts with school personnel, pupils, parents and other members of the community.
Keeps the Board informed of issues or activities that may affect public relations or community perceptions.
Prepares and submits reports as requested by the Board pertinent to the conditions and developments in the District.
Ensures compliance with emergency evacuation drill requirements and issues related rules and regulations.
Ensures compliance with all regulations including those pertaining to child abuse, clearances, facilities and operations, transportation etc.
Administers programs for selection of school sites, construction of buildings, and provision of equipment and supplies.
Ensures the laws applying to attendance of children at school are enforced.
Ensures that federal, state and board policies, procedures, rules, regulations and laws are enforced.
Performs such duties, responsibilities and special projects as assigned by the Board of School Directors.
Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Board of Education.
Travel Requirements Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
