Location Backus Hospital (10309), Level 3 Trauma Center
Role Scope
Commit to an innovative patient-centered delivery system.
Provide advanced practice care for complex surgical and critical patients.
Collaborate with attending surgical intensivist, admitting team, and consultants.
Responsibilities
Manage multiple patients with varied critical illness, perform comprehensive physical assessments.
Interpret diagnostic results, manage hemodynamic/ventilator support, document daily progress notes.
Educate patients/family and lead multidisciplinary meetings.
Perform bedside procedures: arterial lines, central lines, chest tubes, feeding tubes, percutaneous tracheostomy, PEG tubes.
Develop practice guidelines and clinical pathways with critical care surgeons.
Implement and teach Surgical Critical Care curriculum for APP staff.
Support standard orientation, service-based competencies, educational schedule for new hires.
Serve on department/hospital committees for patient safety and quality initiatives.
Plan and coordinate staffing needs with the APP Director and assist with timekeeping.
Qualifications
Nurse Practitioners (APRN) – National certification in Advanced Practice, MSN, current CT Nurse Practitioner (APRN) License or equivalent.
Adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner (AGACNP) board certification required.
Physician Assistants (PA) – current CT Physician Assistant License and Board certification or equivalent.
All disciplines – Federal DEA, CT Controlled Substance Registration.
ACLS/BLS required.
ATLS – supported by Backus.
7+ years of Surgical Critical Care experience required; 10+ preferred.
