Field Safety Engineer role involves a wide range of responsibilities focused on ensuring safety in a high-tech research environment, including conducting inspections and audits, developing and implementing safety programs, investigating accidents, providing safety training, and managing safety considerations in construction projects. This position requires strong communication skills, technical knowledge in engineering and safety, and the ability to work independently and collaborate across departments.

Core Responsibilities

Hazard assessment:

Conduct regular safety inspections of facilities, equipment, and work environments to identify potential hazards, performing job hazard analyses (JHA) and failure mode and effects analyses (FMEA). Develop, implement, and improve safety programs and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and best practices. Investigate accidents and close calls to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.

Safety training and guidance:

Provide technical guidance and training to staff on safety-related aspects of projects, equipment usage, and regulatory requirements.

Project safety:

Integrate Environmental Safety & Health (ES&H) considerations into the planning, design, and construction of infrastructure projects.

Equipment safety:

Evaluate and approve safety equipment, tools, and machinery to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Documentation:

Maintain detailed records, including safety audits, training, and incident reports.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Technical expertise:

Proficiency in engineering principles and safety regulations, with specific knowledge of areas like electrical safety, laser safety, and personal protection systems (PPS) relevant to a large research facility.

Problem-solving:

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess risks and develop effective safety solutions.

Communication:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with various teams, from technical staff to management, and to document safety procedures. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment.

Independence and Ownership:

Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects and tasks with general guidance.

Project management:

Experience with project management processes, risk management, and change management is often required for construction safety roles.
