Summary This position is responsible for producing high quality mammographic images and all special examinations necessary, i.e., needle localizations, radiography of specimens, spot magnifications and stereotactic biopsies. This position is also responsible for performing quality assurance activities as established by the department and regulatory agencies in a timely and accurate manner.

Responsibilities

(70%)

Performs high quality mammographic examinations with accurate positioning and proper technique by following established standards. Minimizes radiation exposure to patients and staff by practicing radiation protection techniques.

(10%)

Demonstrates proficiency in special procedures: needle localizations, radiography of specimens, spot magnification views and/or stereotactic breast biopsies, and Bone Densitometry testing (DEXA) if done in their department.

Shares in daily work related responsibilities such as putting away supplies, stocking linen, and cleaning equipment.

(10%)

Ensures operation of mammography equipment by completing preventive maintenance instructions; troubleshooting equipment; calling for service. Performs daily quality assurance testing and monitoring established by the department in a timely and accurate manner.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Has knowledge of and adheres to guidelines and standards of regulatory agencies.

Serves on teams which examine and decide policy regarding mammography and mammography related procedures, when asked.

Documents patient mammogram services by completing patient record charting.

Updates job knowledge by participating in continuing educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

All other duties as assigned.

Certifications and Licensures

ARRT - Reg Radiologic Technologist

ARRT M - Mammographer (obtain within one year of hire date; meet MQSA initial training requirements of 40 hours of CE credits within 2 months and 25 supervised mammograms)

BLS - Basic Life Support (required within 1 month of hire or transfer)

Required Education Education: Associate’s Degree. Degree in Healthcare Related Field. Knowledge of radiologic technique as normally acquired through completion of an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology. ARRT registered or registry eligible in mammography within 6 months of hire required.

Ability to work independently to produce desired results.

Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief and death. Ability to wear personal protective equipment including latex materials. Must be able to move freely within the facility, sit/stand/walk for long periods, and perform tasks such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required. Ability to handle multiple tasks, maintain attendance, stay awake. Overall dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping. Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently 10 lbs., and perform walking/standing/pushing/pulling of arm/leg controls.
