Position Summary The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating shared leadership, evidence‑based practice, relationship‑based care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. This role implements professional practice models, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to deliver quality patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and accrediting bodies. The Staff Nurse I advocates for the patient, develops educational plans, and collaborates with the health care team to promote effective care and supports departmental and unit goals daily.
Duties & Responsibilities
Complete required orientation program and unit‑specific competencies.
Develop, implement, and update the patient’s plan of care based on ongoing assessment and input from the patient’s family.
Share information and collaborate with other health care team members to promote effective patient care.
Verify and implement orders from physicians, physician assistants, and advanced practice nurses by performing prescribed interventions and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
Engage patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.
Engage support personnel by delegating tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provide support and feedback.
Demonstrate commitment to UI Health’s values through teamwork and effective communication to achieve quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction, and a clean, safe and therapeutic environment.
Advocate for patients, families and community members while representing the nursing profession.
Integrate theoretical knowledge, evidence‑based research, current standards, and clinical experience to provide quality patient care as measured by established standards and accrediting bodies.
Utilize the hospital‑approved acuity tool and electronic scheduling tool to facilitate optimal staffing, scheduling, and patient assignments.
Recognize and support shared leadership as the selected method of nursing governance.
Participate in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership activities; support departmental and unit goals through daily behavior.
Perform scrub functions: selection and handling of instruments and supplies used during procedures.
Perform circulating functions: monitor, record, communicate patient condition and manage overall nursing care before, during, and after procedures; prepare cases, case carts, and operating rooms.
Demonstrate accountability for job performance by seeking opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge and maintaining employment conditions (RN licensure, BLS, and unit‑specific certifications).
Complete all assigned duties that assure quality, safety, and efficiency.
Assume role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.
Provide and receive feedback to and from the health care team regarding performance and practice.
Perform direct patient care services including triage, transfer care, medication administration, preventive screenings, blood pressure checks, diabetes education, wound care, ear irrigation, voiding trials, pre‑op education, lipid management, anti‑thrombosis management, continuous glucose monitor placement, and related interventions.
Assist providers with procedures and support emergency care, ensuring equipment and medications are stocked and logged.
Maintain wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels and return patient to normothermia after procedures.
Provide nursing and appropriate monitoring per policies and procedures.
Practice and monitor aseptic technique.
Adhere to UI Health’s Code of Conduct.
Treat patients, families, staff, students, and visitors with respect and dignity.
Follow nursing time, overtime, and attendance policies.
Complete electronic learning modules and programs by established dates.
Comply with University Health Services TB, flu compliance, and fit‑testing requirements.
Utilize established communication channels and chain of command to resolve patient care problems.
Identify recurring clinical practice problems and participate in problem solving and resolution.
Collaborate with other nurses to provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
Serve as preceptor and/or resource to nursing staff and students.
Access UI Health intranet/Outlook for communication and policy updates.
Support nursing and multidisciplinary research efforts on the unit and UI Health.
Engage in professional growth and development by identifying learning needs and initiating strategies to meet them.
Participate in committee or process improvement projects proactively.
Work independently within the scope of nursing practice under the guidance of the Director/CNCII.
All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
5 years of prior operating room experience.
Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit‑specific certifications.
Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships.
Intermediate computer skills with ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on‑the‑job training.
Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.
BSN graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse from the State of Illinois.
ACLS/PALS certification within 60 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Nursing certification preferred.
Excellent attendance.
EPIC proficiency.
