Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Amperesand

Base pay range: $130,000.00 / yr - $230,000.00 / yr

Amperesand is disrupting industrial power with the first commercialized Solid State Transformer systems. We build products for data centers, EV charging, renewables, microgrids, and industrial installations. We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team and contribute to the development of power electronics products. The role involves designing custom machinery and supporting project cycles from concept through installation, commissioning, and handover to operations.

Responsibilities

Lead the mechanical architecture and design of medium‑voltage power electronics converter assemblies.

Model and design complex electro‑mechanical parts including plastics, sheet metal, insulators, magnetic components, and high‑voltage connectors.

Perform mechanical design analysis including structural FEA, thermal CFD, vibration, and fatigue assessments.

Resolve packaging challenges involving electrical isolation, sealing, thermal dissipation, EMI/EMC shielding, and mechanical shock/vibration.

Define and execute validation test plans covering structural, thermal, and environmental testing.

Produce 2‑D drawings with GD&T for production and inspection.

Create engineering documentation, tolerance stacks, BOMs, and release packages via PLM systems.

Collaborate with electrical, thermal, firmware, controls, manufacturing, test, and industrial design teams.

Work with suppliers to optimize DFM, DFA, and tooling for high‑volume production.

Lead prototype development, fabrication, assembly, and mechanical testing of new designs.

Support root‑cause analysis of design issues in pilot or production builds and drive iterative improvements.

Conduct trade studies for system‑level decisions on architecture, materials, and manufacturing.

Guide selection for structural, thermal, and electrical compatibility in high‑voltage environments.

Contribute to integrated cooling system design including cold plates, thermal interfaces, and airflow paths.

Develop assembly procedures and manufacturing instructions for scalable production.

Participate in mechanical FMEA and DVP&R activities across product lifecycles.

Work with quality and reliability teams to meet performance, lifecycle, and safety targets.

Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across multiple product programs.

Contribute to strategic technology development for future‑generation SST products and enclosures.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

4+ years of experience in mechanical design for power electronics, automotive, industrial, or energy products.

Expertise in CAD modeling using 3DEXPERIENCE (CATIA V6/V5), SolidWorks, NX, or Creo.

In-depth knowledge of statics, dynamics, heat transfer, and materials.

Proficiency in GD&T, tolerance analysis, and DFM/DFA principles.

Experience designing enclosures for IP‑rated or outdoor‑rated power equipment.

Experience with high‑volume manufacturing processes (injection molding, die casting, extrusion, sheet metal forming).

Working knowledge of metals, plastics, ceramics, gaskets, and potting compounds.

Hands‑on experience taking designs from prototype to production.

Familiarity with PLM systems and engineering change workflows.

Comfortable with root‑cause analysis, failure‑mode resolution, and mechanical reliability testing.

Strong communication skills and ability to lead cross‑functional design reviews.

Prior experience collaborating with suppliers on tooling, DFM, and tolerance negotiations.

Familiarity with PCBAs, connectors, and mechanical integration of high‑density electronic assemblies.

Experience with regulatory documentation (UL, IEC, NEC preferred).

Ability to drive concurrent engineering initiatives across multiple product timelines.

Passion for product innovation, sustainability, and electrification through engineering excellence.

Willingness to travel 15%–20% internationally.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in Agile development, task management, and sprint planning using Scrum and Jira.

Background in structural, thermal, and vibration analysis (Ansys, Fluent, Maxwell).

Familiarity with electronics packaging and PCB interface considerations.

Experience with medium‑to‑high‑voltage systems and insulation coordination.

Employment type: Full-time. Seniority level: Mid‑Senior. Travel: 15%‑20% internationally.
