Transit Security Officer – 2nd Shift

Starting Salary: $58,000 / yr. Work Hours: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM.
Position Summary This position is under the direct supervision of the Security Manager. Employees are responsible for the protection of life, safety and property of agents, assets and patrons of Hampton Roads Transit, and for the operational continuity of the transit agency.
Essential Job Functions
Prevent crimes and security incidents at HRT facilities, properties and aboard transit vehicles and vessels.
Protect HRT assets, personnel and patrons in the transit environment.
Coordinate closely with local law enforcement and emergency services for security or safety incidents.
Respond to and remediate active security incidents or other emergencies, ensuring continuity of transit operations.
Perform other duties assigned by the Security Manager.
Other Duties May Include
Document all security issues in daily logs or other reports.
Assist in security‑related issues as identified or directed.
Enforce HRT policies and procedures for personnel in the transit environment.
Conduct proactive patrols of facilities or other HRT assets on foot or from a vehicle.
Monitor video surveillance systems and card access control systems.
Communicate with HRT personnel or emergency services via telecommunications tools.
Conduct investigations or other special assignments to address security concerns.
Carry a weapon for de‑escalation and defensive purposes.
Prevent unauthorized access to HRT sites or services.
Manage records in compliance with the HRT Records Management Policy and Procedures.
Maintain awareness of HRT’s EMS and handle related responsibilities per the Environmental Policy, SOPs and Emergency Management Plan.
Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Knowledge of security operations, safety practices and enforcement procedures.
Effective oral and written communication with staff and the public.
Understanding of state, local and federal criminal statutes affecting transit security.
Knowledge of alarm, access control and surveillance systems in HRT facilities.
Certification and skilled use of a firearm and other defensive weapons.
Ability to work under pressure and in stressful situations.
Proficiency in miscellaneous computer applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
Skills in de‑escalation techniques and incident management.
Required Software Knowledge and Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), computerized spreadsheets and databases.
Report preparation, presentations and internet research.
Safety Responsibility
Perform all duties safely to protect oneself, colleagues and the public.
Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures and policies.
Report unsafe conditions or hazards to the supervisor, manager or Safety Department.
Training and / or Education
Current certification as an Armed Security Officer through the Virginia DCJS or ability to obtain it within 60 days of start date.
Current Firearms Endorsement registration or ability to obtain it within 60 days of start date.
Required Experience
Two (2) years of law enforcement experience or five (5) years as a professional armed security officer.
At least 21 years of age.
Military security experience with honorable discharge accepted in lieu of private security or law enforcement.
Preferred Experience
Two‑ or four‑year degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
Public transportation security experience.
Licenses or Certificates
Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
Current Armed Security Officer DCJS Registration Card and Firearms Endorsement (or ability to obtain within 60 days of start date).

Unusual Demands Work is performed inside and outside of HRT properties, potentially exposed to inclement weather and unpredictable crisis situations. Shift work is required and may change per Security Management discretion. Duties may require weekends and holidays.
