EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Flint Institute of Arts (FIA) is the second largest art museum in Michigan and one of the largest museum-connected community art schools in the United States. Through their exhibitions, events, and programs, they seek to connect diverse communities through fun, creative, and inspiring visual art experiences.

FIA now seeks nominations and applications for its next Director of Finance and Administration. This Director will have the opportunity to oversee the financial health and processes of the organization, including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and compliance. They will also oversee the Facilities and Security Departments, as well as IT contractors. This role works closely with the Executive Director (reporting directly to them) and with management teams to support informed financial decision-making and maintain regulatory adherence.

ABOUT FLINT INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS For 90+ years, the FIA has been responsible for acquiring, protecting, and presenting a collection of art and artifacts spanning the globe. The world-renowned collection, which exceeds 8,500 objects, is significant for its depth of important European and American paintings and sculptures, 15th century to the present, and its extensive holdings of decorative and applied arts including important ethnographic study collections dating back five millennia. The FIA promotes the power of the visual arts by providing lifelong learning opportunities to engage and educate a diverse regional audience.

Through its collections and exhibitions, studio art classes, educational and family programs, community outreach, events, and collaborations, the Flint Institute of Arts Museum + Art School strives to be known locally, nationally, and internationally as an outstanding center for the visual arts.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR THE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE + ADMIN Financial Management

Proactively monitor and manage the FIA’s overall financial health and position through regular financial reporting and analysis.

Prepare and analyze financial statements, such as income statements, balance sheets, budget to actual, and cash flow reports. Preparation of the financials includes reconciliations and journal entries.

Produce financial reports and presentations for internal stakeholders (including the Board) and external stakeholders, including analysis by program, function, and event.

Oversee all financial operations, including budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, investment management, fundraisers, and short- and long-term financial planning.

Assist with budgets, compliance, and financial reporting for grants, capital projects, endowment campaigns, and building reserve funds.

Monitor performance of endowment and investment accounts in partnership with the Finance Committee.

Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Trustees’ Audit; Finance; and Facilities, IT & Security committees.

Ensure compliance with accounting standards (i.e., GAAP) and regulatory requirements. Stay up to date on laws, regulations, and best practices to ensure ongoing compliance.

Conduct month-end and year-end closing activities.

Oversee accounts payable and receivable activities.

Implement and maintain internal controls related to financial processes to mitigate risk and prevent fraud.

Coordinate with auditors and regulatory agencies on financial audits.

Use financial software to streamline processes and maintain accuracy.

Support robust cross-departmental collaboration to align the financial function with broader organizational objectives. Collaborate with department heads to promote cross-functional financial literacy and accountability.

Administration

Review and approve payroll and benefits administration and applicable monthly, quarterly, and annual fillings.

Conduct yearly vendor reviews for strategic pricing opportunities.

Provide strong oversight to Facilities and Security Departments, as well as the IT contractors, including direct supervision of the Facilities Manager, Security Manager, and contract IT Manager.
