Patient Service Coordinator/Medical Assistant (Job Requisition 118481) at The Johns Hopkins University. Location: Sibley Memorial Hospital, Washington, DC. Position involves working as a team member in the Johns Hopkins Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
Responsibilities
Patient Service Coordinator responsibilities: 50% of duties
Offer friendly, courteous, and confidential assistance to every patient to ensure a positive experience at the Johns Hopkins Gastroenterology and Hepatology clinic.
Maintain accurate patient information to facilitate the encounter.
Use automated systems to expedite scheduling, pre-registration, check-in, and check-out.
Schedule follow-up appointments and relay information to patients regarding preparation for laboratory tests and examinations.
Coordinate visits within the department or between departments; obtain accurate pre-registration information by phone or in person.
Print and mail directions, fee schedules, and department-specific information; send medical questionnaire forms to obtain missing information.
Verify and enter pre-registration and insurance information; prepare daily schedules for designated areas.
Confirm appointments; register patients for clinical appointments; inform patients of costs and guide to resources.
Answer phones and provide routine information; handle payments and prepare cash settlements; input diagnosis and procedure codes for billing.
Assist with financing options (e.g., Medicaid, Patient Care Funds) and refer to the appropriate office; prepare patient statements of charges.
Assist with basic insurance and third-party queries and manage incoming/outgoing communications and records requests.
Medical Assistant responsibilities: 50% of duties
Clinical care in the ambulatory clinic under physician supervision; maintain patient safety and flow; organize the clinical environment.
Collect patient information and vital signs; perform data collection and chart review before clinic visits.
Monitor patient status and report abnormal findings; assist in procedures and ensure infection control practices.
Administer injections (e.g., flu, Hepatitis A/B/C) and take pre-visit vitals; perform and document clinical tasks per policy.
Prepare examination rooms, equipment, and supplies; assist with patient education and referrals to resources.
Support front desk duties as needed and conduct telemedicine triage for video visits.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED.
Completion of a Medical Assistant Certificate Program.
Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g., CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP) required; if not currently certified, must become certified within 180 days of hire.
One year of work experience in customer service.
Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification; maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during employment.
Intermediate typing and computer skills.
Additional education may substitute for required experience per JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in the Johns Hopkins system.
Two years in a similar service-oriented industry.
Medical terminology knowledge.
Working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office, and the internet.
Knowledge of medical insurance coverage.
