POSITION PURPOSE AND SUMMARY

The Lead Phlebotomist assists the Supervisor in maintaining an effective phlebotomy operation of the hospital and other draw sites. The Lead Phlebotomist ensures that Operational Excellence is reflected with every patient encounter by all Phlebotomists. The Lead Phlebotomist serves as a liaison between the hospital laboratory and the patient by collecting blood specimens, urine and other specimens from both inpatients and outpatients according to prescribed aseptic technique, for use in clinical and diagnostic laboratory testing. The Lead Phlebotomist is capable of handling problem-solving regarding appropriate specimen collection, handling, delivery of specimens to the main laboratory for analysis, test order and specimen information entry in LIS, and performs clerical, cleaning, and supply duties and assists in developing a working schedule for phlebotomy. Duties are performed under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor and Laboratory Administrative Director/Site Laboratory Manager.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Education/Required - High school graduate or equivalent. Successful completion of accredited Phlebotomy certification or Medical Assistant programs

Certification/Required - NPA/NCA/ASPT/AMT/ASCP registration. Medical Assistant no need for phlebotomy certification if part of curriculum, MA certification to be maintained yearly.

Experience - 3 - 5 years of experience in phlebotomy required
