Mammography Technician

(Mammo Tech) is a specialized radiologic technologist who operates

mammography equipment

to perform diagnostic imaging procedures for detecting breast abnormalities. These images, known as

mammograms

, help to screen for breast cancer and other breast-related conditions. Mammography Technicians are trained to perform the procedure, ensure patient comfort, maintain a high standard of image quality, and assist in patient care throughout the process. Position and prepare patients for mammography exams, ensuring they are comfortable and properly positioned. Operate

mammography equipment

to capture clear, accurate images of the breast tissue. Perform

digital mammograms

and, if necessary, additional views to obtain complete images of the breast. Educate patients on the importance of mammograms, helping them understand the process and ensuring they know what to expect. Quality Control and Image Evaluation

: Work closely with radiologists to ensure that high-quality images are produced and evaluate whether additional views or retakes are necessary. Assist in conducting

breast ultrasound

or

stereotactic biopsy procedures

if needed to further investigate abnormalities found in mammograms. Equipment Maintenance and Safety

: Ensure proper operation of mammography equipment, troubleshooting any technical issues as needed. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment, following safety protocols and manufacturer guidelines. Maintain patient records, including medical history, previous mammogram results, and details of the current exam. Document relevant patient information, such as imaging results, positioning, and any special instructions or requests from the physician. Ensure all procedures, patient information, and images are properly logged into the hospital’s

Electronic Health Records (EHR) system. Collaboration with Medical Team

: Communicate effectively with radiologists and physicians regarding images that may require further attention or additional imaging. Assist in explaining test results to patients, helping them understand what comes next in the process if further evaluation or follow-up is needed. Work closely with the healthcare team to ensure continuity of care for the patient, especially if abnormal results are found. Adherence to Safety and Regulatory Standards

: Ensure compliance with

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations regarding patient privacy and confidentiality. Adhere to

American College of Radiology (ACR) and

FDA

guidelines for mammography procedures and safety. Educate patients on the importance of regular mammograms and breast health, including self-examination and lifestyle factors that affect breast health. #
