Data Analyst III – Texas Department of Transportation This position performs moderately complex data analysis and data research work. The role involves detailed analysis, extensive research, and providing results in various formats. Responsibilities include monitoring and implementing measures to ensure data quality, using standard statistical tools and techniques, and translating data into actionable insights using data visualization software such as Tableau. The position works under general supervision with limited initiative and independent judgment. Essential Duties Identify and interpret data patterns and trends and assess data quality. Prepare concise, comprehensive technical reports to present and interpret data, identify alternatives, and make justified recommendations on data revisions. Develop reports, dashboards, and interactive visualizations using Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep, and Tableau Server. Access information from business organization cross‑sections to make good business decisions and provide excellent customer service. Review and edit materials and recommend revisions in scope, format, and content. Consult with internal and external customers to identify user needs. Compile and query data. Analyze data using standard statistical tools, methods, and techniques. Interpret results to identify significant differences in data. Clean and prune data to discard irrelevant information. Modify existing reports or develop new ones by analyzing databases, data sources, and structures for the benefit of users. Assist in defining, developing, and implementing data standards. Perform other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related discipline. Relevant work experience may be substituted for the degree on a year‑per‑year basis. Experience: 2 years of data analysis, research, compilation, or report writing and design work experience. Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent. Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis. Licensed: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Preferred Qualifications Experience working with Tableau, Microsoft Project, developing design and construction schedules. Competencies Considerable knowledge of data analysis and interpretation, designing complex graphic materials, business processes and methodologies, data import and export protocols, technical requirement analysis, business process modeling, methodology development, and data modeling. Proficient Skills Communicating technical information effectively. Use of technical tools such as Excel, Access, SQL, and other heavy data analysis tools. Developing and presenting reports in multiple formats. Report writing and design. Working with streaming data and unstructured data from multiple data sources. Using Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, or Qlik. Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems. Some Skill Creating graphical user interfaces, visualizations, mockups, prototypes, and design documents. Ability Analyze data and derive informative conclusions. Effectively organize and prioritize work demands in a fast‑paced environment. Evaluate and make recommendations regarding data integrity. Translate complex data into user‑friendly information. Implement and use new technology and work processes to enhance decision‑making. Build, establish, and maintain effective working relationships and coalitions. Protects sensitive and confidential information. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Sedentary work: lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools. Sitting – prolonged periods of time. Fingering, picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand. Close visual acuity – work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
