Audience Editor – Midwest, Eater Location: Chicago, IL (remote) — This job is remote, based in Chicago, IL.

As part of Eater’s mission to build the world’s best restaurant recommendation platform, our Dining team shapes restaurant coverage that helps readers decide where to eat — and why it matters. In this role, you’ll create engaging, trustworthy stories that reflect Eater’s voice and values. You'll hone your voice as a guide and tastemaker for Chicago, demonstrating local authority while ensuring our work reaches audiences where they are and makes an impact.

We guide our audience from discovery to obsession and inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.

All staffers at Eater work across Eater’s umbrella of brands (Eater, Punch, Pre Shift, Thrillist) on a variety of platforms (on‑site, social video, newsletter, the app, and more). Staff are expected to be comfortable dining out for work, filing engaging dining reports, shooting and producing social video, appearing on camera, and representing Eater at industry events, brand events, and media and press opportunities.

What You’ll Do

Produce, edit, and distribute social video with enthusiasm and creativity.

Identify, develop sources, and report on the dynamic Midwest food scene — with a focus on Chicago.

Write and edit clean and engaging copy for both Eater’s website and social platforms, adapting tone across Instagram, Reels, Facebook, Threads, TikTok, BlueSky, and others.

Engage audiences across social media, newsletters, and Reddit by responding to comments, fostering conversation, and maintaining brand voice.

Manage newsletter programs under the direction of the Dining Editorial Manager, building newsletters in Sailthru and Substack, adapting editorial content, performing basic analytics, and inbox management.

Willingness and ability to dine out for work‑related research, including outside of work hours.

Who You Are

Plugged into the Chicago food scene with a knack for identifying engaging restaurant news stories and trends.

Proficient in Photoshop to create visually engaging carousels and high‑touch social media posts.

Skilled in executing social video, confident and poised appearing on camera.

Familiar with audience‑focused storytelling on a variety of platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Substack, etc.

Comfortable with tastemaking, updating and editing maps, researching, and writing dining reports.

Capable of breaking news and writing insightful service‑oriented features with accuracy; comfortable working with PR representatives and owners of mom‑and‑pop restaurants.

Experience editing news and service coverage is a plus.

Openness to feedback and quick adaptation to put ideas and edits into practice.

Where You’ll Work This is a remote position based in Chicago, IL.

Pay Transparency Pay Range: $73,000 - $78,000 USD. The salary range listed represents the minimum and maximum base pay for this position at the time of this posting. Final salary offered will be based on factors including but not limited to the candidate's skills and experience.
