Position Summary The Research Assistant I will support the Molecular Genetics Core Facility at Boston Children’s Hospital, assisting in state‑of‑the‑art genomic and molecular analyses including DNA/RNA extraction, library preparation, and sequencing. This position offers hands‑on experience with next‑generation sequencing (short‑ and long‑read), sample QC, and data management in a high‑throughput, translational research environment.

Key Responsibilities

Perform routine laboratory experiments and procedures according to prescribed protocols and schedules, using standard equipment and recording/checking results for completeness and accuracy.

Assist in troubleshooting procedures when experimental results are unexpected or specimen quality is poor.

Perform the following techniques typically required for the laboratory/study:

Maintain records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed.

Maintain equipment, lab area, and supplies in a neat professional manner.

Sterilize and clean glassware, and prepare media and other materials using appropriate procedures.

Inventory supplies, alert supervisor to needed supplies, or mix standard reagents.

Process orders for supplies and/or animals. Attend safety courses for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive, and toxic materials.

Carry out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.

Conduct literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I.

Attend courses, lectures, and conferences to further knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.

Contribute to the team within and between departments and organizations.

Minimum Qualifications Education

Bachelor's degree in STEM or Psychology

Experience

Analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
