Overview The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall leadership and management of nursing and clinical operations within the Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC). This position ensures the highest standards of patient care, safety, and satisfaction while maintaining full compliance with all federal, state, and accrediting agency requirements. The DON will lead the ASC’s readiness for surveys, audits, and inspections by continuously monitoring and improving regulatory compliance, quality programs, and staff education. It is vitally important that the DON nurtures relationships with all stakeholders, and fosters a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and respect throughout the organization. The role champions an environment where every team member feels valued and empowered to provide exceptional, patient‑centered care. DON actively promotes open communication, continuous improvement, and a culture of compliance consistent with the ASC’s mission, values, and regulatory standards.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities Leadership & Operations
Provide strategic and operational leadership to all perioperative clinical areas, including pre‑op, intra‑op, and PACU.
Collaborate with physicians, anesthesia providers, and administrative staff to ensure efficient and high‑quality patient care delivery.
Develop and maintain nursing policies, procedures, and protocols consistent with current standards of care and regulatory requirements.
Oversee staff scheduling, performance evaluations, and competency assessments.
Perform other duties as may be appropriately required or assigned.
Assume administrative authority/responsibility of the Center in the absence of the Administrator. Delegate authority/responsibility to another qualified individual in his/her absence.
Promote, inspire, and motivate staff through professionalism and integrity.

Serve as the ASC’s compliance and clinical regulatory lead.
Maintain continuous readiness for CMS, ASSHC, Joint Commission, and state health departments surveys.
Conduct regular mock surveys, audits, and tracers to identify and correct deficiencies before inspections.
Ensure accurate and timely completion of all required documentation, logs, and reports.
Monitor and interpret new regulations, standards, and laws applicable to ASC Operations, update policies and practices accordingly.
Perform other duties as may be appropriately required or assigned.
Quality & Patient Safety
Lead the ASC’s Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) program, ensuring measurable outcomes and improvement initiatives.
Oversee infection prevention and control activities and reporting.
Investigate and analyze adverse events, near misses, and patient complaints, ensuring appropriate corrective actions and documentation.
Ensure adherence to life safety, emergency preparedness, and environment of care standards.
Foster a culture of continuous learning and accountability.
Ensure all clinical staff receive ongoing education in regulatory compliance, infection prevention, and patient safety.
Develop and conduct annual competency and emergency preparedness training programs.
Fiscal & Resource Management
Collaborate with the Administrator and Medical Director to develop and manage the nursing department budget.
Ensure effective resource utilization and cost control without compromising patient care or compliance.
Education, Experience and Training Bachelor’s degree preferred (BSN) from a four‑year college or university; and one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
BSN license, Master preferred.
BLS, (ACLS and PALS preferred).
Computer Skills Proficient computer skills in a Microsoft Windows Environment.
ADA Physical Demands Rarely (Less than .5 hrs/day) Occasionally (0.6 – 2.5 hrs/day) Frequently (2.6 – 5.5 hrs/day) Continuously (5.6 – 8.0 hrs/day)
